Yes there are a few versions of PS3 that came out since launch.
There was originally the 20 and 60 gig versions.
20 gig was semi-backwards compatiable (most fixed with updates)
60 gig is almost fully backwards compatiable
Both systems were retired and they introduced the 40 and 80 gig versions.
The 40 gig is compatiable w/ ps1 games but not ps2 games
The 80 gig is compatiable w/ ps2 and ps1 games
The 80 gig was retired but brought back for MGS4 bundle
If I made a mistake let me know, I did it off the top of my head

The 20 & 60 where the same with BC as they had the same hardware. The only differences where the 20 did not have WiFi or the Card reader slots (and a smaller HD). Now this is for US models, Euro models never had the US type of 20/60 gig with full hardware BC only via software emulation as the 80's are now (and hopefully the 40's with a firmware update *rumored*).
i heard that the 60gig has the highest back wards compatability rate and the 80 gig has a close second. As as far as i know the 20gig does not have the emotion chip (hardware emulation ,60 and 80gig), run off of software emulation

No the 20gig has the EE, the NA and Jap versions anyway.

Hi! I'm not a pro at this PS consoles. I'm getting married and one of our principal sponsor is giving us a PS3. After reading your thread, what would be the best to get then, a 40gb or a 80gb. Thanks a bunch in advance.
Well, that depends. Do you have some PS2 games that you'd still want to play? If it's a gift, just go for the 80 GB, lol. Can't go wrong...cost you nothing, eh?

As oner said, it most definitely has full BC, even though I hardly use it.
