Alright people, the new firmware 3.3 has been released and rumors are flying about what it does. I'll list what I've heard from multiple sources, everyone else can add what they've heard.

Firmware 3.3 blocks the twilight hack my checking for the hacked save file. It dosent block the error in the disk that allows the twilight hack to work, just disallows the use of the savegame file.

Homebrew channel still works, but its much harder to install without a twilight hack of course.

Truncha signed disks no longer work.

The freeloader disk is blocked as well.

I havent heard if scrubbed disks still work, can anyone confirm if they do or not?

The freeloader isn't blocked. That part of the 3.3 update info was an early april fools joke stated by wiibrew.org. Freeloader will still work after 3.3

Nope, no way to roll back the firmware. generalm, since you're updated to 3.3 anyway maybe you can test if scrubbed disks still work. I havent been able to get conformation one way or another on them yet.

Any word on if a brickblocked iso will be affected? It took me a while to get wii fit English working and i don't want to jeopardize it.

I saw the following information at another site, I don't know if its helpful or not to anyone. Below is the cut&paste of that information.

Update 1: IOS30 and IOS31 have been changed ? specifically, the kernel. The old timestamps read:

$IOSVersion: FFS: 06/08/07 18:10:10 64M $
$IOSVersion: ES: 07/10/07 18:11:26 64M $
$IOSVersion: IOSP: 06/25/07 14:17:16 64M $

The new timestamps read

$IOSVersion: FFS: 06/08/07 18:10:10 64M $
$IOSVersion: ES: 07/10/07 18:11:26 64M $
$IOSVersion: IOSP: 04/03/08 19:37:33 64M $

It?s interesting that Nintendo bothered to update the IOSP timestamp, because the only change I see in IOSP is that the version reported changed (there?s a variable that stores the value ?040308″. They?re trying to be clever; the actual bug fix was in ES, where the encryption code lives.

The strncmp signing bug has been fixed in IOS30, which is what the system menu uses. (The new signature-checking code is identical to that in IOS37.) This probably means that it will no longer boot Trucha-signed discs, but I have not yet tried it. Early reports on IRC indicate that the Homebrew Channel still works; this is consistent with my understanding that the system menu does not verify the content of already-installed content.

I don?t know why IOS31 was patched.

Update 2: Okay, now this is just silly. Three functions have been added to the system menu. Guess what they do:

* ipl::utility::ESMisc:eleteSavedata((unsigned long long, EGG::Heap*))
* ipl::utility::ESMisc::VerifySavedataZD((unsigned long long, EGG::Heap*))
* WADCheckSavedataZD

We Are Not Impressed.
Update 3: They wrote a special-purpose function to try to check for the exact exploit we used ? specifically, if a savegame is for Zelda, it checks the length of 6 strings inside the savefile (two of which are the player name and horse name). It repeats this check for all 3 saveslots, and then another three times for all 3 backup slots.

No, we do not have a response to this yet; we will probably take a few days to formulate one. I predicted Nintendo would *not* do this; I?m disappointed. This was the first bug we found, in the first game we tried. We?ll find others, and they?ll have to try to catch up to each.

Update 4: It?s interesting to look at the timestamps here. The System Menu has a build marker of ?systemmenu.rvl.0803060727″ ? yes, that?s March 6, 2008, 07:27. This update to the menu only accomplished one thing, as far as I can tell ? the blocking of the TP hack. (I guess we can count the IOS30 patch together with it.) They spent 3 months testing it ? this isn?t actually that surprising, when you consider the potential financial damage if they roll an update out that bricks Wiis.

Congrats to tmbinc and tehpola for finding a combination of two bugs in the code that Nintendo added that ? when combined ? allow us to fool their check into ignoring the TP hack. More info will be forthcoming ? I still wouldn?t rush to update my system, anyway.

Well it seems that this guy updated his Wii to 3.3u and he has no trouble playing scrubbed games. He also says that freeloader dosent work. Do any of you know if this is true? I've heard people say it still is.

Quote:
A new update has just been released that does something with the Mii Parade...but here's the interesting part:

"Because unauthorized modifcations to save files may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 3.3 will also check for and automatically remove such save files."

So update or NO update? that is the question

EDIT:

I went ahead and updated the Wii to 3.3u. Here are my findings

1.) Homebrew Channel works fine no problems no freezes no hangs
2.) I Had the internet channel Installed before the update. Still works fine no hiccups.
3.) I removed the internet channel using the wad manager and installed it again with no problems.
4.) All backups work fine Including different region (i have NTSC-U will and pal game), brick blocked games and wii scrubbed games, SSBB works.

IT IS SAVE TO UPDATE AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL INSTALLED BEFORE THE UPDATE!!!!!

Just a question. So if I get a game thats released before the 3.3 update lets say a week before should it have the 3.3 on it? or a older one?

he may say so that Scrubbed disks may work but mine locks up my wii as soon as i put it in... (the SSBB DVD5 disk)
if i put it in before i start up my wii it says something about data being corrupted... and if i put it in after my wii booted it says something about a disk error and im 100% sure the disk works... it worked before the update.

and it IS possible to downgrade the wii... but now someone needs to find a way to do it without the homebrew channel XD

WTF? :p

Hi,

I am new to all this posting, so I don't know if I am helping out by saying that I had a Wiikey(1.9g) with a japanese system (First generation) and did an update to 3.3j. Now, my backups cant be played at all (no scrubbed, as I did these backups before that popped up I guess). Anyway, I do know that when I put my disk in, it says that it cant read the disk error. I can't put an original at the moment because they are all at a friends house (who is not in for the next 2 weeks! What a bummer :( ).

Anyway, hope this helps you guys, and if I can contribute, then just tell me what to do and I'll do it.

momonga01, what media are you using? Because after one of the last updates lower-quality media that worked previously had stopped working for some people.

Oh, really? Because I use HP dvd-r for the wiikey update, and the older backups are kinda random (most of them Ben-Q DVD-r. Does that help?

PS: Thanks for the fast replies by the way... much appreciated!!!

Hi there, ok this is going way back but i'll ask if im in the wrong place please let me know.
Reading all this 3.3 threads im not too much excited about updating my wii, but i read somenthing about a installing a homebrew channel before the update to avoid all problems or most of them. Ok here is the question: my wii right now (and this is what i mean by going back) is at 3.1u, and my wiikey has never been updated, and its like a year old. Is there any chance of doing an update to all my updatable stuff?,or not? once again if im in the wrong place let me know please.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

There is currently no reason to update to 3.3, you don't get any benefits from it.

You should update to 3.2 if you plan on playing recently released games.

You would also need to update your wiikey to 1.9s to play new games like SMG or SSBB.

Yes you can install the homebrew channel and it would still work if you did update to 3.3, though like I said, there is no reason to do so at the current time, just stay at 3.2 or lower depending on what you want from your wii.

The only way I can see that the 3.3 update would stop some games working is if they are trucha signed.

Does anyone have any proof that non trucha'd backups are also not working since updating.
