Has anyone tried swapping a ps3 harddrive from one ps3 to another one? I'm wondering if it works. Or if it's like with PC HDDs that it doesn't work because of the drivers. The reason I am asking is that I am exchanging my ps3 for another cuz I got the blinking red light (it won't turn on) and I had a second HDD as a backup with my saved games and all the config stuff. And I don't wanna lose my stuff so I was wondering if once I get the new ps3 if I could yous swap the HDDs.
Not sure - however if you have all the info backed up an a HDD then if the it comes to the worst you could probably put that drive into a caddy and connect it up externally and caopy your info back to the new PS3 that way.
strange it should work, at most can only see it asking you to format it before it continued. if u had 2 computers exact same (like 2 ps3's) than u could interchange the HDD with no problem.

I guess I'll just try once I get back home and I'll let you guys how it went. If it doesn't work I guess I'll just do as liamrabey said and connect it externally to get the info back.
Unfortunately you cannot do this. When i exchanged my PS3, i got the guy in the shop to take out my HDD and put it in the new machine...but when i got home it made me format the drive anyway, so it was a waste of time. You can do a backup with an external HDD, takes about an hour and uses about 12gb though.
If you have everything backed up on another drive, why not just use the new HDD on the new PS3 that you picked up? Then just transfer all the data from the secondary drive to the new one. Either that, or I'm totally missing what you're saying lol. Sorry. I'm at work.

yeah, it didn't work, the ps3 asked to format the drive. So I'll just have to get a usb sata adapter to connect it externally and get my saved games and stuff. I wonder if i'll be able to transfer the demos, since they get installed on the hdrive.
