I was researching alot about the playstation 3 and its many different versions (20, 40, 60, and 80 gig), and I just couldnt decide on which on to get because many people had different "facts" about them. i have basic knowledge down about the 40, 60 and 80 versions and am not considering buying the 20 at all, so lets forget about that one. First, I was wondering about the 40 gb version, as i know it has no Backward compatibility whatsoever. That said, is there any...even a glimpse of a possibility that Sony will make a update for that version via online download, or trade in or anything?

Second, the 60 gb version has been cancelled in its sales, and now only the 20, 40 and 60 are left? or is it only 20 and 40 now?

Backward compatibility is a serious element that i would most definitely want, if i were to ever get a ps3, having said that, are there any recommendations anyone might have?

Thank you, in advance.

The 40 gigs and 80 gigs are left. And the 40 gig does have PS1 bwc just not PS2 bwc. If you're concerned about playing PS2 games go with the 80 gig, its a better model anyway, card readers, 4 usb ports.

Oh and the 40 gig system does use a newer chip design so it uses less energy, and therefore less heat. But here's the catch, since it makes less heat Sony took away a lot of its heatsink and made the fan more powerful, so heat wise you're gonna end up with the same thing its just gonna be a tiny bit lower on the power bill.

Great! thanks, also, ive read that the bwc on the 80 gb wasnt that great compared to the 60 gb version due to the fact that it used emulation software rather than the ps2 hardware. is that still a problem? is it so bad that it makes a huge difference? if worse comes to worse, ill just get the cheapest ps3 and a ps2, cuz bwc is a big deal for me.

That was probably just someone ranting either about the ps3 or about it loosing hardware emulation, I only deal with the facts of the matter.

I have a 80Gb and love it, but i'd gladly trade it for a 60GB, there surely has to be something inferior with Backward Compatability or atleast i hope, i started noticing when i put my fighting games, i'd say there's sort of a frame rate drop or lag i find it REALLY notisable with fighting games wich timing is everithing, also try Gran turismo for 4 in the intro movie you'll see what i mean

yeah, thats exactly what im talking about. there are engadget articles that have statistics on how many games have lag problems, sound/music out of sync and stuff. the 60 gb is better because of the hardware it has that the rest of the ps3 model lacks....apparently
