Hey guys. Theres a broken PS3 on ebay, it powers up, but the seller admits the blu ray drive needs to be replaced. Is it a good idea to buy the unit and replace the drive myself?

Depends on what the price is and if you can fix it then go right ahead, I assume the Blu-Ray Drive may need to be re-programmed, again if you can do it go ahead

If you end up buying it let us know of your experience with it, may be useful when PS3's start coming with Blu-Ray drives of higher read speeds and we want to upgrade

The first question to ask is "whats wrong with it?" If the Blu Ray drive is shot then your only option to a successful repair is to replace the blue diode. You cannot replace the entire drive because each drive is keyed to a specific motherboard. You can also pay Sony $150 to repair it for you.

LOL well I wouldnt be a happy customer is Sony charged me $150 for repairing a system when it was still in warrenty :P
