40gb ps3 wont read disc alll of a sudden during summer

help all of a sudden our 40 gb ps3 wont read any disc we bought metal gear solid 4 and days l8ter our ps3 began 2 freeze in games and had probs reading any disc.we think it mite be that the disc reader is corrupted or busted.we think the hard drive is still fine but we r not so sure.we lost our receipt just so u no.plz our summer sucks without it so plz help a fellow gaming member.any help or suggestions. fr.carlvin who is having the worst summer of his life

I got the exact same problem today :(
Same game also. I bought MGS4 just yesterday. I was playing it this morning on one of the missions but i got frustrated with it so I quit the game to xmb then i decided to go back into the game to play MGO and when i click on the game icon to launch it it seemed to have launched the game normally (went to a black blank screen) then it just stayed there for the longest time. It wasnt accepting any input from the controller so i turned of the system and restarted it and now no games, BD movies or regualar dvd movies work at all. I think its the drive that doesnt work for some reason also because not even an icon pops up where its supposed when i insert a disc.
Also I updated to firmware v2.40 as soon as it came out and my ps3 was working perfectly up until this afternoon.

I don't think it was the update that caused this because aside from it not reading any discs everything else works just fine. It was also working fine after the update but before this happened. I'm thinking of buying a new one and throwing the old one in its place (its 6-8 months old btw). Any suggestions?

yeah im not so sure how mine broke heres some of the things i heard thats has some reasons how a 40 gb ps3 breaks all of a sudden

only a 40gb ps3 breaks like that
metal gear solid 4 overloads ur hard drive
the 40gb over heats fast
update 2.40 breaks ur ps3s hard drive
broken blue ray reader
dirty lens

thats all i heard wen i went to different sites about it

if u u think 1 of them is wrong or i 4 got 1 just say it

Yeah i never even got to play it at all :( The game just didnt even load. It stayed at the black screen when i relaunched MGS. I read on other sites that it is probably either a broken blue ray reader
or dirty lens (or maybe both? :() like you mentioned and that your only alternative is to send it in to get fixed. But after all of this happened (I was still using my ps3 for internet & music) I shut it off and took out the hdd and it was really hot. It's temperature did not seem normal but I don't know how hot a ps3's hdd normally gets.
Right now I'm just trying to decide whether to send it in for repair or do what i mentioned earlier and replace it with a new one (anyone know what would happen if i got caught? it is a $400 product that I would be 'stealing'). Please I also need some help or suggestions.

yeah good ideas but theres some problems 4 me

i dont have money to get a new 1 im 14

and im from guam and theres no place to repair it here

and my mom said just fix it cuse cuse shes not gonna buy a new 1
