PS3 PlayTV coming September 10th

article published on 18 July, 2008

Sony Europe boss David Reeves has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 PlayTV device will launch in Europe beginning on September 10th in the UK and then launching in other regions until December. For those unaware, the PlayTV is a device that acts as a DVR add-on for the gaming console, one that will allow users to record TV, even if they are playing games. "Yep, it's going to be 10th ... [ read the full article ]

I hope when the US goes digital we get some sort of unified channel line up/info guide so we can MAYBE get PlayTV here. Out of everything coming to the PS3 this is the most desirable feature I can want.

I know the EU feels like they have gotten the short end of the stick at times with things like no Video store yet, the occasional pushed game release date & things like Qore...but I would GLADLY give all of that up just to have PlayTV available over here. I can only imagine having access to any show that is on live broadcast or recorded on my PS3's HD to be able to be viewed on my PSP.

You guys don't know how lucky you are, and REALLY can't complain! lol.

Stress on your PS3 HDD? You think recording will stress it's hard drive? That's a laugh. I've done more to my HDD than just record and my HDD is in great shape.

I don't see how this is a waste, just because you have Tivo, DVR and 2 Media Center TV's that can record, doesn't mean everyone else does.

Also, all your components take up space, while with the PS3, you have a blu-ray player, game console, and a DVR in one peripheral.

Agree, what's the point to have PlayTV...? I have already a bunch of recording devices... record the same waste crap into my PS3?, I don't think so.

And just as the earlier poster said that people just overlook and don't seem to understand

No appreciation for what is offered to those who may be interested...just complaints of "it sucks because I don't want it". Also I find this comment really overlooked

So a DVR cost additional fees monthly, Media center stuff additional costs as well as TiVo's additional fees. I mean come on, to have all of these plus MUCH more in one device that you can buy for $400 (new & less used) plus the cost of PlayTV.

Hey, it's okay to not like something but to not appreciate all that it offers...that's crazy guys!

You obviously didn't read the post above. Not everyone has a recording device, such as myself.

I also want this but I live in NA. The US is somewhat lucky since digital broadcast is just one year away; I think it was Feb 2009. Canada has to wait until 2013!

My Media center PC's don't cost anything FREE...just connect the cable to the PC and thats it....Tivo is also FREE...when I bought it 2-3 years ago I got lifetime service...and my DVR is just like a VCR...sits in cabinet..put a DVD-RW in and thats it...if you need it cool...I just think that most that have bought a PS3 have DVR-type device in the house....Everytime a HDD is used it shortens the life span....how would you defrag it...makes me shreek just thinking about it....just my 2 cents

Now wait a second. i know The U.S. has limited HD content, but how exactly is this supposed to work.

Any word on how the console will utilize this PlayTV Service, there has to be some sort of switch in the PS3's Firmware, but how will the device act if i have it imported. I really don't see how they can region lock a peripheral.

I can't quite answer most of what you're saying but PlayTV intercepts digital broadcast signals only meant for European standards aka. DVB-X. North America on the other hand uses ATSC signals for it's broadcast, though there isn't any digital broadcast for US yet regardless of many newer TV's supporting ATSC.

Perhaps connecting the device to your PS3 will work regardless of region but there won't be any signal to receive... that or it will be region locked.

QUESTION!!

I got a satellite cable, with PlayTV would I be able to connect the Satellite reciever to the PlayTV add-on and then hook it to my PS3, and then have record while I play?

I realise now one has this yet but, i hope those who are keeping an eye out for PlayTV could answer this

I doubt i'll be seeing this where i live(Puerto Rico) because as far as i've heard its only been reported to come out to UK, Australia and New Zealand

I'd just like to know what i could do with this if it were coming here :P

You'd think something like this would get pushed here in the US more sooner than later, but it must be something stopping them from doing so here. I'd love to have this feature also even though I already got a HDTV Tuner card in my PC. But it still would be good to have an all in one portable solution like PlayTV for the PS3. Anyone know if playtv does HD?

I mentioned the reason in a previous post. North America doesn't have digital broadcast frequencies yet. We still have analog broadcast which is standard definition.

The whole point of PlayTV is to play and record HD broadcast television. Europe already has it, US doesn't. Sony might release it sometime in 2009 for US but only maybe. Canada gets screwed on this one... the PS4 will be out by the time we get HD broadcast.

So its only an over the Air device, that make little sense at all. if thats the case then i wont buy it when it does hit America, i only get channel 12 news here and thats at night. for every thing else i use cable.

on another note some states in America have already completed transition, and are awaiting the shut off.

There is some truth not being mentioned though in that your Tivo was not free. The service for lifetime was definitely not free (as I have one w/lifetime also). The DVR was not free. As for the lifespan of the HDD and it being shortened...why use your DVR or TiVo then? They use HDD's that don't need to be defraged so it is not an issue, the same goes for the PS3 & 360 as well.

I can totally understand if you already have these devices and you don't think it's needed (hell I have my Tivo & 2 Comcast DVR's along with a multitude of other tech) but to cut it short for things that have no affect on it's use (defrag?), is a bit far fetched..

I can't wait for this to come to the states. I've been looking forward to this for about 6 months now.

And yeah...I'm one of those people who do not have Tivo or a DVR.

I paid for them ALL...I bought them for reason...My PS3 was bought to play games and watch BR.....NOT to record TV....I bought the other devices for that...except the PCs....they just have that as an added perk...This sounds like the HD-DVD add-on for the X360...glad I didn't buy that...I bet you did....

you must be a moron....I paid for them ALL...I bought them for reason...My PS3 was bought to play games and watch BR.....NOT to record TV....I bought the other devices for that...except the PCs....they just have that as an added perk...This sounds like the HD-DVD add-on for the X360...glad I didn't buy that...I bet you did....
How does this sound like the HD-DVD addon? That was a next generation optical media that failed to grab enough people's attention and just so happened to forefit. This is in a world of it's own. People who buy it would get it to make their PS3 a complete media device, if they don't have TiVo's or DVR's. PlayTV can't really "fail" since it wasn't intended for worldwide release.

Oh and by the way, I think the device captures more digital broadcast signals than available in a person's location. Watch one of the demonstration videos and you'll see what I'm talking about. Think of it as those old TV's that came with 30 free channels such as Discovery and Comedy Channel along with your local channels. Except they're region specific and in HD.

Even if you have a ps3 you are saying that you have a bunch of crap, and you problem is a small box that no one will force you to buy, or what so ever?

Whether anyone wants the additional services/device capabilities that PlayTV offers is exactly what it is optional so you can't fault anyone at all for not wanting something...lets remember that guys (and no need to call anyone names too). But this could very well be a great solution for those who want a multitude of options to be had in one device.
