Developer mopx0 managed to emulate Microsoft's Windows Vista OS on the Sony PlayStation 3, and has uploaded a video to show this attempt in action. Booting up on the PS3 took Vista around 25 minutes.

Based on what we've picked up from the author's comments, this attempt was pulled off by first installing Vista on a PC using Qemu 0.9.1 and Bochs Bios 1.171, with Qemu creating an .IMG file of Vista after installation. mopx0 used Vlite to speed up the installation, though it still took a day to complete.

The dev also installed Qemu and Bochs Bios on the PS3's Linux partition, before the Vista .IMG from the pc was transferred over to the console's HDD. From there, he used the command line qemu -hda vista.img -m 256 -L "Location to Rev 1.171, Drag n Drop" -cpu pentium3 to run Vista off the Qemu emulator.

Bochs Bios was used to fool Vista into thinking it was loaded on a machine using an X86 chipset. As we've said, this emulation attempt is still pretty slow, so it's basically a proof-of-concept for the moment.

Slow isn't the word for it. Pangea split apart into seven continents in the time it takes this thing to load. It is pretty much useless. Windows 98 runs ok on the ps3. If someone were to hack a linux distro and give us full rsx access and ram then maybe xp would efficiently. Vista running smooth I think is out of the question.

Pangea eh??? So what you are saying... is ... there is still a chance.

LOL, Pangea. Priceless

EDIT: Slow or not, great news. Can't wait to see what's next.

Should be working on xp, the only version of windows that didn't turn out to be a pos. Needless to say after xp is dead I'm going with Linux, and leave the gaming to the consoles.

That comment just came out of no where. You can do this with xp and enable a memory stick as ram by making it swap memory, but you still have no rsx access.

What was Sony's reason for restricting access to the rsx and many of the cell's processors under Linux anyway? Its not like doing that would give people access to the flash.

They probably learned a hard lesson with the PSP. They didn't want to take any risks and probably figured that locking down all that $h!t would be the best way to do that. It still sucks, though.
