Hello
I have a PS3 which as you are all aware has the ability to upscale movies.
I recently changed my home cinema setup and have the following connections:
PS3 connected to my AV Receiver via HDMI. The AV Receiver in turn is connected to my TV via HDMI.
When I set my PS3 to Upscale movies it will not play any of them now where before when I had the following setup:
PS3 connected straight to TV via HDMI and Optical to AV Receiver for sound.
It didn't bounce any film back and upscaling was set to FULL all the time.
Is the reason because I am now running my PS3 through my Receiver which I don't think is capable of upscaling?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards

Probably an HDCP compliant issue?

Thanks for the info.
Can I ask if I decided to connect my PS3 direct to my TV via HDMI and then connected an optical (Audio) lead from my PS3 to my AV Receiver would the sound quality be better via Optical rather than HDMI?
Thanks

Actually I would say the opposite as HDMI can support up to 7.1 and an assortment of other things like uncompressed formats etc. though I must admit I am not 100% as this is one area I have not delved into yet as I am still on my 5.1 with optical...a good (new) surround receiver with HDMI and other inputs is my next (basically last) upgrade.

but really...how many movies support a TRUE 7.1?
I got a Harman/Kardon AVR 354

and honestly when i added my dipolors...
it was kind of a waste of money when i ran HDMI cuz nothing supports it

i just run a good quality optical cable and avoid the HDMI switching and she works good!

HDMI is superior to Optical audio. In fact, Digital Coax is superior to Optical Audio. Then again, all of this is superior to analogue audio (red/white). If you have the option, use anything other than analogue. It's ridiculous how antiquated analogue connectors are.

Anyway, if your receiver supports HDMI, go with that. The only reason I don't use HDMI for audio on mine is because my receiver doesn't support it and my HDTV speakers suck (10 watts when compared to the receiver's 1000).

Therefore, my PS3 is connected to my HDTV via HDMI. The PS3 is connected to the receiver for audio via Optical.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply to my question.
Lots to think about.
I guess having had Optical, HDMI jut seems lesser quality from an Audio point of view. Perhaps it's just me but it seems quieter?
Thanks again to all.

If your audio receiver is only capable of "passthrough" via HDMI, there is absolutley no advantage over running an optical cable. If that is the case then I suggest HDMI-->TV, Optical-->Receiver. However, if you just do not have your PS3/Receiver configured properly, I strongly suggest fixing it up.

May I ask, what make/model is your audio receiver.

Hello
Thanks for your response.
My AV Receiver is the Yamaha RXV463.
This is a new setup and so I am very much still finding my feet.
My main issue with it at the moment is that my last setup I had the PS3 hooked straight up to the TV and had my upscaling option set to Full all the time and it never bounced anything back. The TV was a 32" Panasonic Viera. I then bought the Toshiba REGZA 42".
My PS3 is hooked up to my Yamaha receiver now via HDMI and it won't play anything on FULL upscale.
Weird, I don't get it. Hence my post.
Could this be the issue with the upscaling? (my new setup)
I then thought if I run the PS3 direct to the TV via HDMI then I loose out on the surround sound option via my Receiver. So I thought Optical might be the way forward.
Hope hat makes sense.
Thanks for any information you can offer.

At a quick glance it looks as if your receiver is only capable of HDMI passthrough, and switching... no upscaling or HD audio.

Your best bet would be to your connect your PS3 to your TV via HDMI, and optical from the PS3 to the Yamaha.
