I was looking around on craigslist the other day and saw this:

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/tag/782158722.html

Its people like this that ruin it for everyone else.
I can't believe some idiot would have the nerve to sell backups, and openly advertise it.

Does anyone else every see this crap?

Never saw anything on eBay. Are people actually trying to sell copied games on there?
Who cares about the modding, its the games that I'm talking about.

Yeah that's a shitty ad for someone to post, but are you really surprised? I mean this sort of thing goes way back.

Yea... see how it says "modding" and not "how to start your own business earning a living through piracy"...

I just checked... the ad is still up.

I know, no one here is "innocent", but there's a difference between taking for yourself and taking and making a living off of it.

hes the reason people like us cant enjoy the small things in life to keep us busy and stay happy. then again he is also the reason they dont look at us as criminals for playing a measily copied game. so i agree with you all, but you also have to thank their stupidity for keeping the "higher powers" busy. thats just my two cents.

You know what.. I am not for selling pirated backups at all, but its kills me the way people on this site dickride higher authorities and investigate things to feel like they have authority. Come on Bhetrick.. I do not personally know you, but from my guess I would bet most of my money that you have some "backups" that arent really "backing" up shit at your home. Then you have a newsgroups for beginners guide in your sig.. why do we need newsgroups if we are "backing up" something we have.. we shouldn't need to download it. I am NOT trying to get kicked off the boards or be a rebel, but this site kills me the way people always act all goodie goodie and they are regular posters on a site that are the one telling these people in detail how to do what they are reporting!!?? I just do not get it. Noticed I use the word backups.. since its a sin to say the word burned game or copied game on this site, yet there are a gazillion how to burn or copy games guides..

I am not or associated in any way with the idiot selling them on cragslist, but some people on this site need to get real. I hope you got off by turning in a guy that does what you more than likely do, but just took it a step further by selling. Like I said its wrong, but I have a life and wouldn't waste the time finding out how, who and what all places I could report this too..

Im not trying to be the rebel, but damn.. some people need to take a chill pill and not feel super important on this site. Wanna be Internet Police usually turn out to be super geeked out nerds that have no real life authority..

Do not get me wrong.. I love Afterdawn.com but some of the macho men on here are unbelievable...

Sorry for the vent.. I gotta go back and play some more Madden 09.. oops its not the 12th yet..

Eh we understand what you're saying but just understand we're two different kinds of people. We like to teach and help others, this guy is just into helping himself. I've reported 2 Iextreme boxes being sold on ebay and felt kind of like a traitor when i did. But then i thought about it. I don't go advertising that i can mod your xbox into a flying saucer (which i'm probably capable of), i don't advertise anything at all. I orignally sent a modded xbox with my brother to iraq so he would have something to do on his days (hours) off. The product advertised itself and i made a few bucks for my hard work.

I had a professor at itt (taught advanced programming and VB 2) that used to work for microsoft and he had even more crazy mods on his xbox (developers version) than i have ever seen. He taught the majority of us that we don't need to buy the highly over priced programs (like adobe photoshop and 3dstudio max) to be able to learn how to use them when not in the computer lab.

I also had a class on ethics, which put everything in the right perspective. From my understanding if you download photoshop and make a couple images for someone free of charge that's ok, but if you download the program and start a business using it to make money for yourself then you are ethically wrong. If you were making money off of it why couldn't you buy the program to support the hard work the developers put into the software?

I've modded a lot of xbox's free of charge. Then again if i did any extra work to them i charged for the hours of work put into them. I've also charged people to turbo their cars, fix their computers, build business networks, solder some major electronics, and even just be a tech to help them complete their task (while drunk and sitting in a lawn chair).

Posting a listing on craigslist is just like running out in the street and not expecting to get hit by a car. You should have some common sense when modding a console, obviously this guy didn't have any.

In my book he deserves to get caught. But if you think that he's like the majority of the contributors (not noobs) of this forum then you are completely wrong.

I do however think it's a bit harsh to nail him with the fbi and higher authorities.

That's as far as im going to go... live and learn.

Yeah, thanks for that, but when it comes to what counts I'm sure you know the saying: "The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000." The key here is "WITHOUT MONETARY GAIN" - This clause puts ALL OF US AT SAME LEVEL.

So if the FBI wants it that way, we have to play their way. With that said I think it's wrong to report people for listing on ebays and craglist. 1. we of all people have the least right to report anybody; I think we all know why that is. 2. As stated: with the "monetary gain" clause, we even have less of right to report anyone. Doesn't matter if you are selling or not, everyone is on same level. 3. Frankly it's the FBI's problem to investigate these things, they really don't deserve help, and especially help form people like us.

I'm pretty disappointed to see some respected users here doing said things. Really a bad move.

Cannibals are always bad whichever way you see it.

I dunno.. I have been in this game for many years and seen many stupid people try to get rich quick selling copies..

What I find is this.. These people aren't members of the modding community, they are more your street corner drug dealer types.. they don't care what they sell as long as it costs them next to nothing and they make a quick buck.
Often they just download off the internet, or the real cheapskates buy (or borrow or are given) 1 copy off a friend and then run 500 copies which they sell knowing that if they get caught the feds will be interested in who originated the content.
I don't feel any sympathy for these rats at all.. they know it is illegal and like dealing drugs they don't care. They are exploiting the ignorant and lazy, that's all..

We in the "real" modding community have long looked down our noses at these people.. the "pirates for profit" brigade with scorn.. Next time you want to support somebodys drug habit give a beggar £10 and watch him scuttle off knowing that at least he hasn't ripped you off with faulty and illegal goods ;)

The FBI has bigger things worry about than some small time pirate. Local PD may or may not even care. Now if somene is running an operation taking hundreds of thousand of dollars the FBI will be interested.

On the reporting someone like that I wouldn't do it. I see at least 3 guys in my area selling backup on Craigslist and I think they've been at it for at least a year. I sell modded console on there, but not backups. IMO There's very few things worse for someone to be than a rat especially when you are engaging in illegal activities yourself. If you are in the US and playing backups that's illegal no matter how you try to spin it.

It's not the console modding the guy is doing, it's the backups. In big bold letters he's offering Madden, which isn't even in the stores yet. Then he goes on to offer a $3 discount if you buy 6 or more backups.

If you guys feel I'm a bad guy for reporting a bad guy, so be it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion... and I respect that.

If you guys think it's acceptible to earn a living off piracy, well... that's your choice.

Remember, it's not because of this guy alone, but a million of these guys, why we have the RIAA, MPAA, ESA, etc., etc. breathing down everybodies back. And people who feel that selling pirated material is fine just add to the problem.

This is the guys ad, in case some of you haven't seen it.

i agree with most everyone here, you all have put up some valid points probablly one of the most in depth threads i have seen in awhile. Now with that being said, I think we just need to remember one thing, they are not us. and not to add fuel to the fire, but whoever said that copying a cd is illegal is wrong. we all know what is right and wrong. most likely we are all guilty of something at some point in time in our lives. but not like these guys, they want the easy street in life, and are probablly on welfare that YOU pay for. so they sit around play video games all day and live off of you and the illegal activities they do. we play games. thats it. thats in my opinion (correct me if i am wrong) is a huge difference.

Them = Steal to sell what they can when they can.

Us = Play video games to stay entertained.

I am not saying i would report anyone, mainly because i am too lazy to do a search on how to, but those guys have whats coming to them plain and simple. if they were selling a game of halo 3 to their buddy accros the street would you care? i know i wouldn't. but when they are advertising this stuff!?!? they make the public think thats what a pirate is, when its not. hell M$ often hire hacker and pirates to help them prevent that kind of thing. I know its a two sided conversation, but i would just like to think the "we" are not "them"

Hmmmm...$15 dollars for a backup seems like a ripoff to me considering if you bought two of those backups you could have 20 discs to use as you wish.I think some countries allow people to backup the games they own,but its illegal in some countries as well.I don't support piracy, but I'm not gonna tell either if your doing it.I figure if these companies want to stop it they can do a better job like the PS3 for instance. If these companies paid me to track down pirates I might consider doing it,but to do it out of free will then nah no deal. How about the psp as an example with the pandora battery which I would consider a form of modification.I could probably sit here all day and tell you all every system has some mod done to it that is considered illegal and probably the majority of us have used it.The way game companies see it if you modify the console hardware or internals in any way its illegal in the USA as far as I know.Think of it this way we buy the consoles, but don't have full rights to do whatever we want with them which I think is BS.I understand your point when it comes to piracy, but some of the laws they have hurt hackers and regular people that want to repair systems or to improve it the list goes on.Its starting to come to a point where you have to modify the console in order to get anywhere whether its a hard/softmod they are considered modifying the system in an illegal way.I don't think I respect a person for selling copies of games, but if a person isn't able to make their own or have the hardware to do it themselves I think they should be allowed to back up their investment by paying someone to do it for them with proof that they own the original. If your game gets messed up do the companies that make the game swap them out for free, because in all honesty I mean we are talking about discs that are pretty fragile. If a disc gets a couple scratches on it the occasional skip is bound to happen or won't read.I was gonna try to stay out of the conversation, because I don't like to talk about piracy.I do feel like everyone should have the right to keep whatever investment they have safe whether its a console or game, but then again there will always be idiots that abuse it.The piracy issue is never going to stop so we might as well live with it.

let the guy do whatever he wants, it's not other people's job to investigate things like this, even more, it's not our job.
