I have a PENTINUM III - 500MHZ with 256Megs of memory and a 120gig harddrive. I find that with compression mostly set by DVDSHRINK, it takes about 2 hours to put it on my harddrive and with a Microadvantage 4X DVD burner it takes an additional 20 minutes to put it on a DVD. I have Nero but have been using CloneDVD until I become familiar with Nero. Since I have two DVD drives what I do is put two movies in at night when I go to bed and run two instances of DVDSHRINK. It almost doubles the time from two hours to four but what do I care, I am in bed. I can then burn them in the morning. Burn time is miniscule compared to decrpytion and compression time.

rick 5446 I dont know if you have tried it yet or not but you could possibly be able to update your firmware for your drive. This is how it recognizes the formats. If you have your drives website I would guess you can find it there. If not you possibly could find it at cd freaks.

http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive

I didn't see a Hi-Val listed there but you can e-mail them

When I go to hival.com,I get a referral to i/o magic. So I'm assuming that it is an i/o magic Drive.I've written them 3 letters without any reply I've called them long distance.Still no reply, they refer me to on line chat but it is always closed.
Hi Val does not even list my DVD burner on their web-site.Personaly I think their Service sucks
I've gotten good useage out of their CD Burners in the past. That's one of the reasons I bought it,also the $99.00 Perice tag.
Can't find any Drivers,Even if I do I would not like to instal the wrong ones.
Many THANKS for your Response,I just LOVE AFTERDAWN.My Home on the internet

Hiya,

Have a look at:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters

Put your writer code (HDVDRW4D) into the search box, have a read what others say about the drive, especially about identification of drive, location of firmware etc.

You are not the only person having problems with this drive.

Have Fun...

Hiya,

to get around the Region Code problem, you could try the following:

AnyDVD:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/anydvd.cfm

DVD Region-Free:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_region_free.cfm

You have probably reached the change limit of the drive.

Have Fun...

Hey there fellas, fasfrank mentioned setting the drives to DMA as opposed to either Master, Slave, etc... I understand Master, Slave but not really sure what the use if for DMA, could anyone enlighten me a little bit more and what would that have to do with ripping speed?

Thanks,
Always looking to learn more

You still have to set your drives to Master, Slave ,or Cable select. The DMA setting is found in the control panel. Then device manager, then click on each drive(all HD and CD/DVD drives). Then click settings for each one. There should be a box to check to enable DMA for each one. Primary HD should be master on the first IDE cable. The DVD burner should be master on second IDE cable.

Hi Rick
Ypur Hi-Val is made by a company called BTC, and you can go to their website and download new firmware. However I would advise that you be very careful when installing the new firmware . I would recommend that you unhook any other CD/DVD drives on your system and set the Hi-Val to secondary master. ( I have recently fried a BTC DVD writer when the firmware installer went through the process to the point of erasing the old firmware then locked up.) There are also region free hacked firmware versions available.

Thank u Jerry746,But been their, done that.Did'nt have prob w/Hi-Val writing at 4x but it went tit's up,& I could not get any decent response from lite-on so I said frigg them & Bought a MadDog Label which turned out to be a NEC 2500A.I was kinda thrilled about that as I've got a NEC 1300A which works really well.
But now I'm getting agrevated at this 2500A.

But what puzzles me is that it works great through DVDShrink. So I'm thinking that their is nothing wrong w/Nero.Also the the 2500A works great through DVDShrikk
GO FIGURE????

Hi Rick,

So if I'm reading your posts correctly, This is what you have installed...
ROM: JLMS HD166S
Burner: Plexor 708A

You are using the newest version of Nero to burn Ritek G-04 -R media.

I am trying to understand the problem so bear with me.

After burning the disc, you checked it with a program called CD check. What program is this? Didn't you have to use your JLMS HD166S to run this program? If so, the ROM is reading the disc. The movie will not play though. Is this correct?

You also stated "I put it in My Hi-Val it works & plays Fine". Now this is a second DVD burner? Where is the Plexor installed? Did you switch drives?

I'm just not sure what is going on here...You also stated "This problem just popped up over night, worked fine when I went to bed.Tit's up the next Day"... So the disc worked OK until the next day?

Are you saying that the disc played in both your DVD ROM and your DVD player then a few hours later, the disc would not play in either device?

Hi Rick,

I used the link drchips provided to read some comments about your Hi-Val burner. I'm surprised you are still using it if you have a Plexor 708A!

Try burning the same movie with the Plexor instead and see if that plays in your DVD player.

A DVD burner does more than just burn the data from your hard drive, for example the burner does a 15 step power test before burning. This is done during the lead in portion of the burn process and is required for the DVD to burn and play properly. During the burn itself this power test runs continuously to insure that laser power is correct at all times.
Another thing to consider is firmware. Firmware installed in the burner is used to control the burn process. Correct firmware allows the burning of supported media which means that the firmware is used for media recognition, among other things.

The point is that because so much more than just burning the data occurs for a DVD to play properly, a burner must do several things correctly. A failure to perform checks accurately could result in a burned DVD that has data burned correctly however the DVD as a whole does not meet the DVD specification, so cannot play on your equipment that requires this.

From what I've read so far, the Hi-Val burner is a rather cheaply built unit without much support. I'm not surprised by the hit or miss burning it seems to be doing. Because you have the Plexor, you should consider retiring the Hi-Val.

If your Plexor can perform consistent burns where the Hi-Val cannot, then that narrows the problem down to the burner.

These are external burners and I assume you are using high quality, short cables to connect them to your computer's USB 2.0 port. A bad connection or trying to use a USB 1.1 port can cause all kinds of problems as well, however an error message is usually associated with these types of problems.

You have Nero so if you can perform a burn with the Hi-Val and then post the burn log, maybe I can see something that would be helpful.

Sorry for being so long winded,

Cheers,
Frank
