The 20gb is what I have (along with an 80gb). It is a launch day system that has the better backwards compatibility inside, so if you want to play the majority of your PS2 games a 20gb or a 60gb is the way to go. The 20gb also does not a have memory card reader built in (not a big deal a USB one will do the same) as well as no WiFi built in.

If the condition of the PS3 is perfect then it is not that bad of a deal. Just make sure you get his original receipt (or a copy) just in case you need service down the line as Sony will need that. So for $250 and another $60 you can install a 160gb hard drive (with ease) so space would never be an issue.

The reason why the 60gb and 20gb were discontinued were because of manufacturing costs. They removed the chip which lets it play ps2 games so well; called the emotion engine, in order to cut both production and retail costs.

The only thing the new consoles have over them would be that the 40gb has a newer processor that uses less energy and generates less heat, but the actual performance of the upgrade is for the most part negligible.

i called gamestop and they said trade in value for a 20gb ps3 was $200 with 1 controller. $215 with 2 controllers. thats why i figured 250 was a good deal

If it seems like a good idea to you, then by all means, go to it.

The biggest factor in deciding which system to get is (in this case) the WiFi and backwards compatibility that someone above mentioned.

If the PS3 is in good condition (have you checked it out?), then I'd say it's not too bad a deal, seeing as how that thing originally went for... how much, $300? $400? And that was by itself. You get a game and a second controller with this.

And like Oner said, you could easily get a bigger hard drive for it and still pay less than the current 40GB model (which goes for... I think it's $400 right now). Newegg has 250GB and 320GB hard drives for less than $150 each.

So go for it. Do it. You know you want to.

Do it.

Do it.

...or not, it's up to you.

Sounds like a decent deal to me. You also might want to check out the shape of the controllers. The reason for this is because with my original controllers I had sticky analogue sticks. They would stick up or down and be stiff and hard to play with. Also as everyone else has said, check the condition of the system itself.

The PS3's browser doesn't support FTP. If you can set up an FTP server there should be no trouble setting up an HTTP server as I did. It's a huge help when transferring things.

Not a bad deal, especially since the 20gb went for $500 on launch day.

i setup a http server on my desktop and browsed it on my ps3. i got another question though. will the ps3 run without a HDD? reason i ask is in the ps3 option it has the option to format the HDD and restore settings so if i pop a 120GB HDD in there formated at fat32 will my ps3 boot up and allow me to format it and use it or will i have to put speial software on the new HDD?

I don't belive it will run without a HDD.
Just pop in the new HDD, when you turn on your ps3, it'll ask if you want to format, answer yes and your all done.

Wouldn't he have to install the OS onto the HDD first? Or is that already stored on some internal memory of the PS3?

The ps3 operating system is stored internally.
