Why is it that I seem to see two different types of lasers for the ps3?

There seems to be this kind of laser that has only one lens.

And then there is the laser that has two lenses, as if it has two separate lasers.

What is the difference. My 40gb has the double laser. I would have expected the second laser is there to read cd's and dvd's, and the bluray laser for bluray discs. Can the other single lens one do the same?

I believe the newer ones may have the double laser to read Blu-Ray and DVD/CD, it puts less of a stress on the Blu-Ray. This is why on some of the newer ones Blu-Ray dies but CD/DVD is fine.

Interesting, my question would be if I were to need to replace the laser in my 60gb would the one with dual lens's be compatible or would I have to find the older style?

That, I can't answer. I would think not since the PS2's couldn't use different lasers from the 30000 to 50000 series

Oh and one more question, is it possible to replace the lens's individually with the new style or would the whole assembly still have to be replaced?

I haven't done it but I believe you have to replace just the lens. It has to be able to be done since they sell lens's only.
