Okay so i am just about to buy this system the Sony DAV-S550 and i would just like to know if it will sound the best hooked up to my ps3 through the optical output. If i do it that way or any other way will i be able to play say call of duty 4 and when a said grenade is dropped near me i will hear it coming around the 5.1 speakers.

Many people like breakfast in bed so i say why not just sleep in the kitchen :-)

I have a sony 5.1 from about 2003 or whenever I got it for my birthday. It's pretty low quality because it was about $200 or so at the time, but that being said I use optical for 5.1 and you can definitely tell when grenades drop and that's not much to ask for. Optical is very high quality and a good way to go if you want 5.1.

I am using a Panasonic SA-XR25 surround amp and when jooked up with optical is amazing quality. Costs around £700-1000. Just so you know im using Mission fronts and rears, Jamo center and REL Acoustics subwoofer.

If your receiver has optical as the highest form of connection then yes, but if it can be used via HDMI then go that route as that is the best @ up to 7.1 channels available. Also just as a bit of help when you figure out which way you will be using remember

Bitstream = Optical

PCM = HDMI
