Ps3 doesn't power on

My ps3 doesn't want to turn on. When i go to | (on the o/|) it shows red led, then i push the start button and sometimes it goes green and you hear the fan, than it turns off within one second. Sometimes when i push the red light, it just turns off. I have the turn it off from the back and back on so the light would come on.
So these are the things I've tried: Replacing power supply, replacing the power switch in the back, replacing the sensor bar (eject/power). I can't call sony since I've opened it already. It's not the power cord, not the wall outlet, not the surge protector.
What can it be!!!??? This is bugging me. I feel like fixing it to get it off my chest. What do you think it is? the motherboard? I have a mobo from a ps3 that the video output didn't work (not even with reset). Can i take out the power section of the mobo and put it on this one? or can I take out the video of this and put it on the one without video?

I'd check for blown capacitors on the mobo 1st thing. Also the cell might not be in proper contact with the heat sink so it might heat up very fast triggering the overheat sensor. Or the heat sensor is shot and its relaying an overheat message every time causing it to shut off.
Just pulling these out of my ass, but all the things that first came to mind you already covered.

yeah it is weird. I don't know alot about ps3's, but obviously i know a little. I will try to google those big words you mentioned to try to resolve this issue. If you want an update on what is happening, here it goes.
Now sometimes when i power it on, it gives the yellow light of death, then red blinks, but that happens once out of every 5 times i try turning it on. Other times it turns green then it turns off (no led at all)

The video output on the other mobo that was shot, was both the SD output shot or was the HDMI shot as well? If it was just the SD out it might just be some bad solder on one of the connections, it would be an easy fix if your handy with a soldering iron.
But if the hdmi is shot as well it likely means that the RSX is shot but since that mobo didn't give the ylod it leads me to believe that the rsx is fine and its just a messed up connection like I had said.

shame you opened it up .my 60 gig hdd went tits up .signed up to continuous play .sony web page .4.99 uk pounds a month .delivered another one 2 days later .fixed it myself bought a 320 gig internal all is good .does not have to be in warranty as mine wasn`t .
psp 2.71 to some m firmware
ps3 60 gig ,now with internal 320 gig
2x 1tb ext hdd for you know what
psn id ....zed1

What happens when there is a yellow light of death? Like is it the mobo, overheating, disk drive, power supply? Or does it vary, and if it varies, how can i test which one is the culprit.

ylod indicates hardware failure in general, in your case since you eliminated a lot of the possibilities I think its either the mobo or severe overheating (or atleast the sensor anyway).
The hdd is still potentially a culprit but the ylod should have come on every time if it was the hdd so its doubtful.

Yeah its probably the mobo. i took it apart and put another fan on it but didn't solve it. I have another system (yes i know, weird) that overheats and freezes, then i restored ps3 defaults or whatever (formatted the harddrive) and i replaced the psu and now it seems to be going ok. Just ok. The fan is now spinning great, before it wasn't spinning good. I'm updating its system right now.
I was on the internet on the ps3 and it froze the internet and I had to quit the internet, when i got to the xmb ( i think thats what it is called) it didn't let me move around, but the ticker on the top right was going(marquee) and when i held the ps3's ps button it took me to the turn off system screen. Is this a overheating issue or what?

The web browser has been having some freezing issues I'm not sure if they fixed it yet but it has froze on me a few times. As for not moving around in the xmb I'm not sure, possibly a bad firmware update. Did you load the firmware from the net or via a usb stick?
Also if you used the backup utility to move your stuff over I'd try wiping the ps3 again and trying it as a clean slate.

Check heatsink contact, if that doesn't work try a new mobo. If that works go back to your old mobo and attempt to disable the thermal monitor somehow.

Well on the one that overheats, I turned it vertically(so it can put the fan on high speed) and the fan stayed the same boring speed. It froze instantly. T

Sounds more and more like overheating or a screwed sencor, like core2kid said check the contact with the heatsink and apply more of the heatsink compound if nessessary.

No, it only has one large fan that works like an impeller. I know it confused me too for a little while.

It's a pretty good fan considering that it sucks in air and blows out air from all around the system.

the one that was overheating, I took it apart and found that one of the cpu's AS5 thermal paste thing was dry. I dont know how but it was dry, so i guess I found the reason, lemme go buy some and update ya'll.... ya i said ya'll

Don't put a lot, just a little when you replace it. I think it's like a pea sized or less drop on a processor the size of a Core2Duo or any other socket 775 PC CPU.

What happens if I put a lot, hypothetically.
The fan spins really fast and gets faster and the ps3 turns off. At least its not freezing :) Should I take some of the gunk off?

The more the worse, you just want a small amount so it makes a straight contact with the heatsink. Clean the old one off with alcohol first.

Okay, I had taken the stuff i put on off and now it freezes again, when i had alot on it, it didn't freeze but it turned off, now it freezes. i will try to put the alcohol on it to take the old out, and try to put the right amount on this time. Is directly related to the problems i am talking about, like the freezing and the turning off.

It shouldnt hurt anything unless you put an enormous ammount, just make sure the compound stays on the chip.

now it runs good. i took both of them off with alcohol, and that was the problem because they looked wet, but they were dry. trippy. Cool deal though, i got it to work.

Good to hear. Just be careful with it now, if I were you I'd keep it horizontally --- instead of vertically |, people say that it works better when horizontal, less gravity to pull the heatsink off the processor.
