Ok everyone here's the scoop:
I'm borrowing my friends PS3 off of him in an attempt to test it out and see if I want to purchase it from him...that being said I'm playing around with all the menus and such and come across the option to update the system (he doesn't have an active internet connection) so being the friend I am I decide to update his console for him. Downloading and installing the update went smoothly...then it resets and I get a screen saying:

Updating Console...
Do not turn off the system...
Remaing Time Counting
(empty status bar)
0%

This remained as such for about an hour with no progress...I figure I'll let it run over night so I went to bed. This morning rolls around I check the console and it's still the same...that being said...I went ahead and turned off the system (disregarding what the screen says only because its been about 15 hours with no progress...trust me, I wouldn't have been foolish enough to do it otherwise) then turned it back on...still the same screen. I tried turning the switch in the back off for a few minutes...still the same screen. I try unplugging the console for a few minutes, same results. I've scoured the internet for forums or help guides with 0% results. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or maybe do a hard factory reset or something? If not I'm out $150 to send it in to Sony and get it fixed.
