I was told at Game Stop u need to download some sort of patch for the PS3 80 gig to be backwards compatible. I have the 80 gig, bundled w/ MGSolid Deal. They promised me at Game Stop it was backwards compatible, but I may have to download a Patch--

So does anyone know about this, if so, where do i download the patch? Thanks in Advance!!

And instead of opening a new thread, what are the features of using a PSP w/ the PS3?? If any are worth discussing.

A)Try doing a firmware update. This may enable the backwards compatibility of your version of the PS3.
B) With the PSP you can access your PS3 via Wifi at home or on the road as long as Wifi access is available. This means you can access your videos and music that you have in your PS3. Also you can doe "remote play" this means that you can play PS1 and some PSN downloadable games like Bionic commando and Pixel Junk Monster on your PSP.
However, before you can do all this with your PSP. You will have to pair it with your PS3.

The new 80Gb consoles are just the 40GB ones with a larger HDD. That means NO backward compatibility.

If your PS3 does support backward compatibility then all you have to do is put in a ps2 game and it'll run it. If it doesnt then it cant.

And about the ppl at Game Stop saying you need to download a patch. They are lying! It that were true ppl with the 40GB consoles would have got it. Sony may introduce backward compatibility on these console in the future in a firmware update but as of yet they cant.

What I would do not is format the drive then return it asking for a refund then buy the ps3 somewhere else. Make suer to tell them you are returning it due to the staff misselling the product and will be spending your money elsewhere from now on. Best case is that they may throw in a game for the inconvenience or some money off, worst case, you but the console from another shop.
Just remember to reset the ps3 as to not give away any of your info or account details

The only Firmware Update that has come out since MSG 80gig PS3 was 2.4 which enabled the XMB to be displayed at any time. You were lied to.

K. If you have the new 80GB PS3 that comes in a white box and comes with the Dual Shock 3 then you were lied to. It's not backwards compatible at all. Unless it is in fact the 80GB that came packed with MGS4 then yes you have backwards compatibility. But it has to be the 80 GB that comes in a white box and the game is in the box as well.

Both Oner and Bawango are correct.

I just wanted to clarify that the Gamespot employee who said you had to "download a patch" was most likely simply referring to the firmware update.

For what it's worth, the MGS4 80GB Bundle IS backwards compatible.

It seems to me like you can assume that all current 80GB and 160GB models are NOT backwards compatible, for obvious reasons.

If you wanted to check and make sure. Wikipedia has a chart that outlines all of the PS3 models both past and present.

Well I searched everywhere, and couldn't find a patch. As it turns out though it was just the game I was trying to play (PS2 Game) just didn't work, all my other PS2 games worked, no patch, no f/w updates or anything. I feel kind of stupid.

But just so people know The 80 Gig PS3 Bundled w/ MGS4 & Dual Shock Controller IS backwards compatible.

Once again, thanks for all the help!

Edit: Instead of opening another thread heres one more question/something that has been bothering the crap outta me....
---In the Video section of the XMB menu is there anyway to play all the videos at once?? I have a lot of music vids saved there and want to play them all back to back, not one by one---

Unfortunately, a video playlist feature is lacking for the PS3. At least last time I checked. And that was a few months ago when I was messing around splitting large VOB files into 4GB chunks for my FAT32 external drive and transferring them over to my PS3 HDD.

Just to make ABSOLUTE SURE everybody knows.

There is NO "patch" for ANY PS3.

If you want to find out whether your PS3 is backwards compatible, look at the page that Bawango provided. If your PS3 isn't backwards compatible, then it will NEVER be backwards compatible. Or at least not until Sony decides to incorporate it in a firmware update... IF they decide to incorporate it.

If your PS3 has backwards compatibility, then you can check here to see whether it can play your game or not:

How about this then... get the emulator for ps2? There's one available and with the interesting development now in play with linux now working on the ps3 I don't see why it wouldn't work?

Not much point in that unless you've got a PS3 that isn't backwards compatible.

Since the PS3 already CAN emulate PS2 games, the only (major) things that need fixing are increased backwards compatibility and working to find a way to play backups.

that is my point... if you don't have it then this may be the workaround to doing it.

Actually, if someone manages to somehow get that software emulator from the 80 gig models, I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't put it on the other consoles somehow.

It'd be a lot more workable than running a PS2 emulator off a Linux OS, but yeah, the Linux emulation is... theoretically possible.

That's all I'm saying, and going to say on the subject, and I agree that it be easier if this emulation could be obtained. Though I doubt Sony would oblige anyone as long as money can still be made off of it. What I'd find interesting if not laughable is if they did take one of the open source emulators and threw it on the newer models! Can we say bonehead move?

From this comment forward I'm saying nothing else as I do not wish to promote piracy, possible destruction to one's property, or worse being the cause of somebody getting carted off to jail.
