PS3 Linux Issues

Well, i had some free time last night, so i decided to install PSubuntu to my PS3. The installation all went ok, and linux boots.
I press enter when it says kboot, and the ps3 runs a few commands and does the checks as normal.
I am then asked to login, so i input my username and password.
It then says:
my username@localhost:~$
And from here, i have no idea how to boot to the GUI.
This is the first time i have used linux, so i have no idea what to do next.
THESE are the install instructions i followed.
I have searched google etc, but as i don't really know what i'm looking for, i couldn't really find anything.
All help appreciated

Well, after playing around with the system a bit last night, i still couldnt get the linux to boot to the GUI instead of the command line, so i decided to cut my losses and just delete linux from the system completely.
So i booted back to the XMB, and did a qucik format under Systems Settings. This completed, so i checked system settings again.
Systems settings said i had 31GB of 37 GB remaining ( my PS3 is the UK 40GB).
So, i decided to do the full format. I selected the "Allot whole drive to PS3" option, and began the format. It took about 2.5 hours to complete.
After it completed, i checked the system information again, and it still stated 31GB/37GB free.
I assume that the linux partition has not been deleted, is there any way to completely remove it?
Also, is there a reason that my 40GB HDD would only show as 37GB?

Drives always show less than they actually are, just the same as any HDD.
Anyhow, I believe the reason it shows up 31GB is that the PS3 OS is actually fairly large and that is what is taking up the space. This does kind of suck as really it means a 40GB PS3 is actually a 30GB PS3.
Either way you could always buy a larger drive and install it into the PS3.

Thanks for the reply.
I know HDD's always show less than they are advertised, but this one is showing nearly 10% less, which i didnt think was normal.
Also, i thought the PS3 OS files were installed on the flash memory of the system, which is why you can swap the HDD without having to reinstall all the software?

Mmmm, I always thought the OS was on the drive but your correct, sorry my information was wrong - I remember reading a similar thread here a while ago, I'll see if I can locate it.

Ok, just done some searching on Google. Looks like the PS3 uses space for installing the Firmware and for Texture Caching. Which brings it down to 31GB on 40GB PS3.
Also the reason for the drive coming up as 37GB to start with is because:
"This discrepancy comes from how different parties define a "gigabyte". When hard drive manufacturers advertise capacity, they define 1 gigabyte as 10^9 bytes (1,000,000,000). When computers report on disk space, they define 1 gigabyte as 2^30 bytes (1,073,741,824).
(40 * 10^9) / (2^30) = 37.252902984619140625"

Ag rite, thats great, thanks for the information!!
That make more sense then. That would also mean that a "quick format" is enough to wipe the partitions off the HDD aswell then...no real need to spend 2.5 hours running the full format!
Thanks again for the information, it was starting to bug me not being able to clear the linux partition off!

Just for clarification, that's also the reason why 5GB DVDs only hold 4.3 GB of data.
When dealing with computers, each prefix increase of 1000 (ie kilo, mega, giga, tera, etc.) is actually an increase of 1024. This helps because data works off of a base-2 system. (0 - false, 1 - true).
1024 can be easily converted to a base-2 number system (100 0000 0000 if I did it right), whereas 1000 can't (011 1110 1000).
Therefore, every kilobyte actually has 1024 bytes in it.
1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes
1 terabyte = 1024 gigabytes
1 petabyte = 1024 terabytes
And so on and so forth.
...I hope I was right on those points, because if I wasn't, I'd feel really stupid...

If you want to make sure its gone pull out the drive, hook it your computer, go to computer management, and wipe the sucker. Put drive back into ps3 and let it format... do not let PC format it! KajNrig you are correct about your base-2 stuff... I just don't think he's gotten the os off, call me crazy if you want, but if I'm not mistaken in this case its still on there.
Remember that the ps3 doesn't have an operating system per say. Its nothing more than a commodore 64 on steroids and Viagra. The 37gb part is what giving me this feeling because a 3gb partition for the console doesn't sound right when there is no os on it at all. A partition like this would only be in play if an os is still on the system, and 6 gb doesn't sound right for any version of ubuntu. Either way go to this website it might just tell you how to solve the problem you ran into its got some really decent step by step stuff:
