So basically I'm going to be breif and to the point. Today is 10/16/08 or only afew mins left of it for me. Anyway i read online about the new 2.50 firmware update that came out this week, so i fliped on my ps3 to download it. I started the download and left the room to return a few minutes later with my ps3 off. I turned it back on and in amazment my ps3 gave me a yellow light. I have been searching and from what i read hopefully its my hdd, but i dont know cause i didnt have another to put in it and test, and it wont boot without one, any way is there any way i can back up my gamesaves and other data?

if any one knows how to get files from the ps3 hdd when its plugged into the computer please!!!!! let me know!

sry if theres something like this on here, im having a bad day, im out of it and my ps3 just broke.

if you want to back up your saves and data insert your hardrive into a laptop, but if the hdd is faulty then you won't be able to access your old game saves as it won't work in the laptop

You could try this http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-217239.aspx though I don't know if it will work as it's supposed to be available when you have 2.50 installed but you got it while installing 2.50. Hopefully you are still within warranty and Sony can fix it, either way this is why I backup my gamesaves at least once a month. Hope you get it sorted. GL.

From what i understand YLOD has something to do with the Power Supply going bad.But i found a fix on youtube that look pretty easy. But dont try this if you have a warranty but if your like me & have the launch 60 our warranty expired in Feb08 so you have nothing to lose like me.

You can find a power supply on E-Bay...I hoped i helped.

ylod indicates hardware failure in general, not necessarily the power supply.

But in most cases its been the power supply.

Whoa, slow down people.

First off, does your PS3 power on and stay on? If it does, then the yellow light signifies that the hard drive has failed. It is my understanding that the drives are encrypted and will only work on that motherboard, so putting it into an external drive won't get you your saves back, unfortunately.

The evil YLOD is when you press the power button, the led turns green, the fans spin up and then the green light flashes yellow for a second then starts blinking red, followed by three audible beeps. I have a motherboard in this condition, and there is someone (finally) on feebay who is claiming to be able to fix this condition, I'm trying to glean a bit more information out of them first, though.

As far as it being a power supply in my case, I know it is not. I have two motherboards (only one complete system), and have swapped all of the fully functioning parts to the YLOD board and back again, including the power supply and fan. I'll probably start my own thread to share more of my (all too lengthy for my wallet) findings. But OP, if your unit stays on, it's likely just a hard drive issue and of any problems you could have, that is by far the easiest.

Good Luck!

Early adopters of the PS3 are starting see the number of defective units increase overtime. Though the numbers of defective units are not increasing faster than Microsoft's console in the past, PS3 owners are starting to take concern.

The problem is PS3 was marketed as a multimedia center, and not just a video game console. For many, the PS3 eliminated the need for other electronics such as Blu-ray/DVD players, I pods, computers (PS3 has Linux OS), and DVRs. Early adopters are quickly becoming familiar with the words "burn out", "over heated", and "expired warranty".

While Sony's customer care representatives insist that the number of defective units are at 3%, those who fall under the 3% are most likely your early adopters who slept outside various stores to be the first to own a PS3.

One thing is for sure, Microsoft went the extra mile for XBOX 360 owners by extending the warranty from 1 to 3 years. Sony is looking forward to finishing the PS3's year 2 campaign, and closing the gap on sales. They are not concerned about the early adopters being forced to pay an extra $150 to have their console work again.

Long gone are the days of the costumer always being right, and the loyal fans with issues being compensated.

My PS3 Fanboy I.D. is hanging in the balance with the cost of a new XBox 360 at $199.

I have done hours and hours of research on this, and there isn't one root cause for the YLOD. Here are some of the 'solutions' that have worked for other people (according to them anyway):

Swapping the power supply
Replacing the hard drive
Re flowing the GPU and CPU
Removing and resoldering a bunch of components (I haven't learned specific ones to look for) on the motherboard

If none of those work then it is likely a component failure, or possibly an internal short or open in one of the many motherboard layers and should be considered not salvageable.

Please, if anyone finds that something else has worked for them, post it up and share the wealth :)

On the board I have I've noticed that two of the sata connectors pins have a solder bridge on them. I don't know how or why it's there, but I cannot imagine it should be.
