I need help. I'm watching blu-rays on my PS3 and I want to know how to get the best sound out of my system (if I'm not already).

Here's what I've got:

PS3
Hi-def TV (Sony, 1080p, 120hz, 4 HDMI's)
Sony reciever (inputs: HDMI, Optical, Dolby 5.1, etc)

Right now I do not have my PS3 connected directly to the reciever. I've got it connected to my TV via HDMI, and my TV connected to the reciever via Optical. The reason is, I was told that I'd get better sound from an optical cable than HDMI. I don't know if this is true or not.

My question is, should I keep it the way it is, or should I purchase a separate optical cable for the PS3, and run it directly to the reciever?

Right, I have the same setup as you and have all sound being directed to the TV with an optical cable linking the TV to the surround sound system. However, there is a problem with this setup as it does not allow you to receive the best sound quality possible.

The reason behind this is because the optical output from the TV is stereo only (2 channels) and therefore isn't high quality.

Method 1: If you wanted very high quality sound from the PS3, it would be best to connect it directly to your surround sound using an optical cable.

Method 2: This isn't the best solution but it is the quickest. If your surround sound system has Pro Logic II decoding, it will split the input audio into many channels thus creating high quality audio. However, this isn't as good as method 1 and will only work if your surround sound system supports the decoding.

Hope this helps
