Alright- heres my situation so far:

I have 3 PS3's that didn't read discs. (40GB, 60GB, 80GB) and I bought a new laser for each, all KEM-400AAAs, and properly installed all of them, and all 3 play games and movies flawlessly. When I put them all back together and tested them, they all had a similar strange problem: When I turned them on, the bluray drive's 4 wheels in the front would spin like they are trying to take in a disc, even though theres not one there. After extensive research, and testing, I have concluded that the optical sensor on the top of the bluray drive is the problem. Because it doesnt work properly, it cant see that there is no disc in the loading dock (the entry way to the bluray drive) so it spins inward for about 8 seconds, and then realizes that there is nothing in there. I tried all of the optical sensors and red/black wire combinations, but nothing changed. My questions are:

- Is there any way to fix the optical sensor?
- Does anyone know of a place I can get just the optical sensor?
(I know that I can get a broken bluray drive on ebay- but those are 60 dollars, and im trying to avoid that.

I don't know of any way to 'fix' the sensor, but you can use the drive without it (as you've noticed, the drive will try to take in a disk but no other ill-affects that I've noticed).

I think the only things I would try would be to re-flow the solder on the blue ray drive controller board at that sensors connector and possibly on the little circuit board itself and see if something was just a cold joint.

yea i try to avoid soldering guns, im alright at soldering but not with tiny items

and its not a likely solution for the problem

Hey, idk if you've had this issue fixed by now or what. But i always like to help and the same thing happened to me. i pulled the cable and broke it. This guy on ebay sells them for 15 bucks...
