My Playstation 3 is having problems with its blu-ray drive. Its way past warranty so I decided to take it apart and see what I could find out about the problem. I took apart the entire blu-ray drive mechanism and I have determined that it must be some kind of mechanical problem with the drive. For some reason it just doesn't feel right each time I put the drive back together.
I determined that it was a mechanical problem as I was able to play a game when I inserted it into the drive when it was taken apart, then put it back in to the Playstation. I've done that a couple times, but I can't manage to get it to play games anymore. The motors all function but maybe something is not lined up or something. Or perhaps I am not putting it back together correctly. I understand that there is a specific way to reassemble the drive in order for the motors to load the disc into the drive, so maybe that is the problem.
Anyways, after numerous trials and after trying many different solutions, I still cannot fix the problem. At first I thought it was just something simple, but maybe it is a little more complex than I had imagined. Right now I am considering obtaining a replacement blu-ray drive. I understand that the drives are "married" to the motherboards, so that they only function with their original motherboard. What I was thinking is to only replace mechanical parts, or to just keep the circuitry from my blu-ray drive and attach it onto the new drive. I have some experience with stuff like this, but not too much. Is there anyone that has dabbled in this type of stuff before and can recommend something that I should do? Keep in mind that I'm pretty sure that it is not a problem with the laser or the lens, so I wouldn't really want to replace them right now, as I don't think that would solve the problem.
