Buying New 360, How Do I Avoid Liteon?

As topic states, I am buying a new 360 today, and am unsure which model to buy (elite, arcade, etc.). I do not want to end up with a liteon drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

More then likely you will get a lite-on. If your lucky and you find 1 that includes the 20GB hard drive then you have a great chance of getting a BenQ.
But the Arcade, Ultimate, and 60GB packages more then likely will have a lite-on.

you'd have to live pretty far from mainland civilization to avoid getting a liteon ....
you're talking about finding a business which stocked an xbox360 8-10 months ago and still hasn't sold it ...

wow that really bites. where do u guys recommend i go to find a good old samsung ms28, or a benq? thanks for the replies, btw.

Recommend for what?
To swap in for the Lite On? The Benq is recommended. The Hitachi's and Samsung's are reported to have a greater risk of being detected on LIVE.
To find in a new console? Again, the Benq. It is quieter and it'd be even harder to find new than a Benq.

thanks for the post. i guess my best bet is to bite the bullet and buy a liteon, then spoof it and swap for a benq. again, thanks

That's the best bet, but there's a catch. Benq drives are pretty hard to find. I'd say make sure you can get a Benq drive first, then get the new 360.
If you can't find a Benq drive, then just pick up a used 360.

yep its weird the benq replacement xbox drives are hard to find and if you do find one its likely to be much more expensive than a samsung replacement.

You could always buy it and check it out when you get home and if it is the lite-on drive take it back the same day for a refund.

I have purchased 3 new xbox's within the last three months. 1 arcade and 2 elites. I don't have the specific manufacture dates handy but they range from march 08 to august 08 and all three were Benq's and not LiteOn's. I will post the actually manufacturer dates, team, plant etc. when I get home. There is also a data base online that people log this information. Try a seach as I don't have the link handy. Oh.. I bought all three at Circuit City in Massachusetts. This particular store has their stock on the floor so I was able to pick the ones I want by viewing the team and manufacture date. The most recent elite I bought I was actually aiming for a liteon based on the date but when I got it home it was in fact a benq.

does it matter any more? Im new to the xbox scene and just ordered mine. I thought everything is ok now with the liteons being able to be stealthed?
One other question, can someone point me to a good how-to on backing up my own games via ftp to the xbox itself?

uhmm no... its not all OK..
its a very complicated process and requires special hardware and soldering ability. and no matter what you need another DVD drive such as a samsung/benq/etc so you can spoof the liteon....
it costs about $100+ depending on how ya do it.

i see the spots i need to solder. I also bought the dvd rom that needs to be put in. I just thought all was ok with this now.
is there a good tutorial that shows how to backup your own games using ftp?

you dont have to solder anymore, just search for the spear method. seems to be much easier, and you wont find a tut on how to ftp games, since it cant be done.

well ya if you invest in the key extractor, spear, and a new DVD drive... but that is some expense that most people would not consider "OK"

ok, um, i live in a small city here in cali, and i got a liteon drive form costco today 60Gb, with the two games (holiday season Kng Fu Panda and Indiana Jones) My friend got a arcade one a week ago with a hitachi drive. Since they have these holiday season packets, they must be new system so all the pro consoles will be screwed with a liteon. Im going to the stores tomorrow and look up the xboxs but ive been online looking up how these been hacked all day and im a bit tired, so im wondering what lot number should i be below to get a hackable one? Im also wonder is it not possible to just swap the dvd drives or is it paired like the original Xbox1 that they did on the motherboard and hard drive?

yes the motherboard and the DVD drive are linked via a key... so you can't just easily swap a different one in...
theres a database thats kept for people buying xbox's... the lot number, and what was inside...

thing is ... you will likely never find an in-store xbox with one of the very low lot numbers... they've all been sold long ago.
and if you look at the last 50 xbox's listed on that website only 3 of them weren't liteon... and one of those guys bought his in the Marshall Islands... so...

Thanks!, well im going to try my luck, and my friend here is wanting to return his xbox 360, his parents going to return it tomorrow so hopefully i could get the drive/motherboard swapped b4 he does, or maybe ill try there, im tring to get the lot number from him but no reply yet ha. I dont know.

Well the Arcade model I got which is dated 8-23-2008, has the Lite-On drive in it. So I dunno people, it's gonna be helluva hard to get a new 360 that doesn't have a Lite-On drive in it UNLESS you go to GameStop like me and specifically ask for a used Core model without the HDMI. I went and asked for a Core unit which had a Hitachi 78fk drive in it.
Long story short, you might have to buy it used and carefully open it and if no luck return and try again (lol, I returned over 3 times @ different GameStops before asking for a used one and then got lucky with a Hitachi 78fk drive). I do have two 360's now, one is a Hitachi and the other is a Lite-On.

yea, im gonna gobuy 2-3 xbox at a time, n try my luck, and maybe ask some stlres to check manfacturing date around or before 2008-03-14. Im tring used if all fails, im just scared of return policies though.
