Hi, can anyone suggest a good graphics card that I could use to view videos on my 50 in. plasma via hdmi? I recently bought this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRev...words%29&Page=3

and I cant get sound with it and it seems to be f***ing with my system.

Thanks for the help.

That card should work fine with your TV, you presumably haven't set it up right. You need to change the sound output on your PC from your normal sound card to the HDMI Audio of the graphics card - it won't automatically be done for you.

Can you please inform me how to go about doing this, it would solve my problem?

Start -> Control Panel -> Sound (Sounds and Audio Devices for XP) -> Audio -> Default Device
Change it to anything that mentions HDMI audio. Note that you will have to have the HDMI audio driver installed for this to work - AMD's website should provide the details for this.

It could potentially be called S/PDIF instead. Normally I wouldn't consider that the same thing, but some people report that changing to that helped them out.

I think I figured out what the problem was, apparently I need to download Microsoft Hotfix (KB888111) before I install the audio drivers. Could someone tell me how to uninstall the hdmi audio drivers?

The install wizard in theory should give you the option to uninstall if you run it again.

I still have no sound, does anyone know of anything else I can try. I have video but no audio and there is no hdmi option under the 'sounds' screen. Is there something Im missing in the Bios screen, should I disable the current audio even though there isn't an option for hdmi at this point, would that just give me no audio at all. Does anyone else have this, or a similar, card running hdmi with sound? Thanks.

I simply cannot get the hdmi audio option to come up as available option. It seems many people have similar problem with this card. Are there any other cards that have the capability to do this function. Even if I have to run an audio chord, although it would have to be about 40 ft long due to my tv being located in a different room than my desktop, that would be fine. I primarily want one that is easy to install!! Im fed up with this one. Thanks for the help.

A 40 foot HDMI cable? I wouldn't recommend that.

i found this con on neweggs review for this card

Cons: Beware of this card if you are going to use HDMI.

The ati (catalyst) driver (including the current version, i.e. 8.10) drops the sound on some displays (including mine) after the display is turned off and back on.

ATI is aware of the problem and claims to be fixing it (and indicates that it will be fixed in 8.11), however they have been claiming that they will fix this problem for the last year.

In some cases people lose the display and not sound, in other cases they lose both.

Google "ati hdmi edid" or HDMION for more information about this problem. HDMION is a program that resets the HDMI link and brings back sound and/or video. I have to run this program after turning off the display to get sound (or reboot the machine).

Had I known about this issue I would have purchased nvidia for HDMI. Generally ATI cards are excellent, but apparently not for HDMI because of this problem.

Setup is Windows Vista Premium SP1, Dell C521, Visiontek 650 and this card.

please understand these are not my words its just a comment i hope might explain and help you out ^^

Doesn't explain it not working to start with though, and for HD video, ATI cards usually do a better job.

I'd be testing out your system on an HDMI cable that is about 6 ft or less before anything else. If you're running long distances it could very well be the quality of the cord that is the problem as Sam indicated.

A long cable wouldn't prevent the HDMI Audiio from showing up in the control panel though.
