hello everyone, a new PS3 problem for me. I have sent in my ps3 twice already, i refuse to send it in again. i can't keep going through this nonsense, to get a ps3 with a different problem. the first one froze and then the HD video connections didn't work. the next one that arrive this one keeps "overheating". the reason i quote is because, according to the manual the blinking red light means the ps3 has gotten too hot to operate.

-for the first time yesterday on home environment the ps3 shut off and went to the blinking red light. i thought it was the electrical stuff in my room, so i turned it on again. 20 min or so bam shutoff. same blinking red light. left it off, now today i went to play COD waw thinking it couldn't handle home environment for some reason and quickly it shut off. (p.s typing this event is frustrating me). so i try again...now the moment i hear the fan come on hard in like 30sec it shuts itself off. (again blinking red light) does anyone know how or why this is happening, and resolved it somehow. when touch the ps3 its barely warm. nothing unexpected.
-The ps3 is on a modern tv stand (glass shelves) and a row all to itself.
-it is connected via hdmi, (its a 60g with a 320gb HDD)
-when play stuff i have the logitech bluetooth keyboard w/the mouse touchpad, and the ps3 headset, and of course the controller.

i don't want to send it in again because of the time it takes to get back, and the pandoras box PS3 that i might get back.
This is the ONLY reason i bought a new tv and all these peripherals.

sorry for the long story, thanks in advance. (T______T)

...it could be that you don't have proper circulation. You said that you have it on its own row in your TV stand, but are you sure that there's enough space for air to come and go?

yeah, you know those cool looking tv stands you always see in the store with the lcd tv. its one of those. and its the only thing on the self. open space all around. i can't imagine why it can't breathe.

-i moved it up a bit to make sure it wasn't that just now. you know so the back could vent. quite as a mouse no fan noises. and went into home environment to see if it was finally working and bam. instant shut off.

iv'e had my 60gb since launch day and not one problem. keep it off for a 24 hours or so let it cool down properly and any hot solder set again.

Yeah you can completely ignore what thumpy said. Do what zero said first and in the meantime do a few things:

What rpm is the HDD you installed?
Take a picture of your entertainment system, one from the front and one from the side.
Can you hear the fan moving at all?

will do. have to get my sisters camera.

And to thumpy, the orignal 60 i had didn't have any problems, i unknowingly messed it up. the cable line had a spike in it and fried my tv and anything connected to it. Thats how the original went. Aftr that i've had pandora box ps3's.

okay edit -----------++++HERE they are.

It should be getting more than enough airflow there, my only suggestion would be to possibly move it over to the side so the rear vents don't hit the wooden pillar, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference.

Anyway, try what Nin and canucker said; in addition, if your camera happens to have a thermal imaging setting... I doubt it, but eh, it's always possible... you could try taking a picture of your PS3 with that setting, just to see for yourself.

Other than that, I don't know too much about heat issues. Mine has thankfully been good to me, so I haven't had any problems with heat.

...or if you want, you can try taking the PS3 out of your setup and setting it up vertically next to your TV or on a chair or something. I doubt that'll help it, but it can't hurt, either... I hope.

EDIT:

That was mean of me. I just couldn't help it.

lol. thanks guys. i'm about half-way through the 24hrs one. and i will try the vertical thing after. Canukerz posts i've been reading on the other threads as far as this overheating issue go. remember when that guy said the ps3 OEM HDD is slightly less rpms, well i don't know how true that is but i read somewhere that even if you put a higher rpm drive in it'll just drop down to an rpm the ps3 can handle. mines is only an 5400rpm western digital. i now have to get back my 60 drive, that i gave away to my friend with a 20gig. but i don't think he used it yet.

If the rpm is 5400 it shouldn't be an issue. That's the same as the stock HDD. We'll have to wait until after the 24 hours and go from there.

yeah i'd say around 0100 hrs gmt -5 to be safe.

-News flash 24 hours up. nothing. this thing is making me furious and i am this close to dissecting it.
p.s it lasted almost 15min. this time. i am now just running test. having it just run through component now to see if the hdmi might be a problem. its just running.
-LOG 2 switched to component. hdmi contrast levels are better by the way. but besides that. as soon as i got into an online match in COD bam instant shut off. next test is to switch back to hdmi, move it away from the back and put all bluetooth devices i have on while playing a game.
-LOG 3 standing vertical outside of shelf, on floor. with cod waw game in. still on.
-LOG 4 failure T__T. system power down. SEEMS to only fail during actual online game play.

@ canukerz do you think this is similar to that one guys problem back in june. the thread is on the bottom of this page.
--======hypothesis======-----
possible blu-ray drive heats up.
----however the system powers down during home environment.

If you do that then any chance of getting sony to fix it is down the drain you realize, they won't touch it with a broken seal warranty or not.

And I do remember that case of the guy's console shutting down/freezing during online play, I don't remember there being a solution for it though. I don't think thats the case though; I think it is just during high processor usage.

I only have two theories left:
1.) Fan isnt working/isnt working correctly.
2.) Heatsink paste wasn't properly applied.

sadly i will wait on the dissection. I have to wait for my friend to return to the country so i can obtain the original HDD, so i can then send it in for the LAST time. Your two theories are exactly what i had in mind, which is why i wanted to dissect it. You see if i get another ps3 there is no telling what might go wrong, and if its as fixable as a fan problem. 50/50 chance of that by opening it. it is still in warranty. i've only had this one for 2 weeks. after that all this stuff goes. i only bought all this stuff just for the ps3, tv, games, blu-ray, peripherals. i almost decided to buy another 60g i saw on craigslist, but i said i will not spend another penny on buying a ps3. its not like the ps2 where i did all kinds of experiment because its easily replaceable.

so you cant hear the fan at all, like its not spinnning?
How long does it stay on if its just on the XMB? If it only fails during gameplay you could try formatting the harddrive incase of any corrupted data.

no the fan spins, and i haven't seen how long it works just on the media bar, but it last alot longer there than anywhere else. it never cut off on the media bar. i'v sent tons of messages from there.but the moment i enter a game. thats it! i'm gonna try formatting the hdd. i don't see why that would make the ps3 cut off but i'm fresh out of non dissecting ideas.

-Log 1 decided to do a FULL format, since i did a quick format when i put the hdd in the ps3 in the first place. its been on for approx. 2hrs. 19 1/2 hrs. to go. I have never experienced a corrupted hdd before, so i am unaware of the symptoms. bought this hdd new and sealed off ebay (-____-)! i also called sony anyway, and they are shipping a box. They are my somewhat alternative.
-LOG 2 (1723 gmt -5) still on and formatting 12%complete.
-LOG 3 (2306 gmt -5) still on 34% complete, 11 hrs to go.
-LOG 4 on for over 18 hrs.... format complete................ went to play game and..............FAIL. *sigh* it shut off again. at least we know its not really over heating.
