Is this possible? As Blu-ray drives go down in price (there are already 6X Blu-ray drives for ~$100, which is three times faster than the PS3's Blu-ray drive) and one of the bottlenecks of the PS3 being its slow Blu-ray drive, would it be possible to swap the Blu-ray drive of the PS3 with any PC Blu-ray drive?
Knowing Sony this gen I'd say they have the drives locked to the ps3's so you couldnt use a different drive or hack the drives firmware like you could with the 360. Its only speculation but I'm fairly certain of it.

Well, in all the PS3 disassembly videos and pictures, the drive appears to be a separate entity with two plugs attached to it, similar to how a DVD drive on a PC has two plugs attached to it (one data cable, one power cable), so I don't know...
Also, I don't think this would allow for pirated games because I've heard that Sony has dedicated one SPU of the Cell to check for pirated games at launch.

Sorry, I didnt mean the drive was actually physically linked to the board.
The drive is "married" to the board through the consoles drive controller board, in that the console cannot be used with any drive other that the one it was programmed to use.
