I've been having some strange problems with DVD Shrink. It will copy kick out a coaster on occasion and the disc will have a dark ring on the readable side. Kinda like the laser made several passes in the same area. I noticed that after decrypting the DVD with DVD decrypter, the DVD data is heavily fragmented on the drive. The encoding data used in Shrink is also heavily fragmented. I defrag that, and it will burn the DVD fine. I've kicked out about 3 coasters till I got T3 to burn and 1 on blade. DVD media costs too much to have this outcome. I don't think it healthy to defrag my drive 3 times a day either. Any ideas? here are my specs:

Winxp Home SP1 with all updates
80gig Seagate SATA (NTFS)
2.4 Ghz P4 533 FSB
512 meg DDR333
Radeon 9600XT 128 meg AGPx8
Intel D865PERL MB
Lite-On 4x DVD Dual format burner model 451S (newest firmware)

Burning software:

Nero 6 Ultra (latest build)
DVD Decrypter (latest)
DVD Shrink (latest)

Thanks

Well it could be your media, I've never had to defrag (I rarely do it anyway) to get successful burns and I usually burn straight to disc (on the fly).

Maybe this review will help you choose some compatable media.

Try running Nero CD Speed's 'Transfer rate' test on one of your burned DVD's and see how it looks. You want a relativly clean line. This would show a good match, media to burner. When you find a good match stick with it.

Seeing as you have Nero 6 and Decrypter, try using Nero's Recode to burn a disc. It's a good program.

hi i had the same problem i had copied 6 or so discs without a hitch then all of a sudden it started to throw out coasters about 3rd of the way on the disc i'd get a deep ring as if it had just stayed static when writing to disc, the only thing that i had done was to update my software or film ware i too use Nero and have a liteon dvd the 811,all i did was to delete my Nero and shrink software and reloaded with the newer versions and i was back to copying normally again, also check that u are using dma mode and not pio i found that for some reason it had changed to pio mode when i rectified this solved my transfer from hd to dvd, just go into device manager and check to see what ur drivers are using check on the ata/atapi controllers,i just deleted mine and rebooted windows reloads them and corrected them to use dma hope this helps

Thanks for the response everyone :)

Nero 6, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are all up to date. All my hardware is using DMA and I have the latest Lite-On firmware installed. Don't know what else to do.

What media are you using? Did you try another brand? Did you try the Transfer Rate test with Nero CD Speed?

I was trying to avoid saying what brand of media because I wanted as many non - media answers as possible. Anyway, its Memorex DVD-R 4x media. I bought 3 25 packs of this new for $20 dollars a pop. What is it about Memorex that makes them so crappy? I licked out another coaster today with Shrink. I have burned 3 discs with Nero Recode and all have been good. Its bugging the crap outta me! I was going to try the cd speed test, but I'm not wasting my time. Its 4x or nothing. Freaking takes an hour to make a DVD as it is. Thanks for your help.

The same thing that made their cassette tapes crappy.
Sometimes you get what u pay for.
I use Verbatim/Maxell ..check your manual and see what your burner suggests then buy 1 or 2 of each to test. Make sure u loan a burned copy to a friend to see if it plays in his/her Set top player. The goal here is to have it play in as many set top players as possible. One day u will be buying a new set top yourself. Also ..use DVD-R.
Rgds.

I also was using Memorex 4x - media and had the same problem with my burner Sony 510A then I switched to the + media I eliminated all my problems. For some dam reason the program did not like the - media.

This is for people who say do not use Memorex Media. Did you know that Memorex media is an OEM version of Ritek. Ritex makes more than 50% of all media used today. Should you not believe this go to Ritek.com and check it out your self.

I uninstalled Nero6,DVD shrink, deleted all registry keys, folders etc and reinstalled all of it. Burned one DVD using Shrink and it was a coaster. Burned the same DVD with Nero Recode and it was once again, successful. I'm starting to think it is a Shrink problem. Maybe a glitch in the newest version? Guess I'll use Recode until a newer version of shrink comes out and try again. If I use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to the HDD and Recode to burn, is the finished product still region free and as good of quality as those produced by DVD Shrink?

I also wanted to tell everyone that when I say its making coasters, I don't mean that I'm getting a burn process failed error. That only happened once. It always says the burn process was successful but when you examine the disc, it has one of two flaws. One is the dark ring on the readable side and the other is dark, streaking smudges that go from the center of the disc out. When you play the disc, it will freeze and skip with both flaws. I don't have any + discs to test whether DVD Shrink just has a problem with the - media.

UPDATE: Okay, now I irritated. I just made a coaster with Nero Recode! I can now conclude that it is A: poor quality media or B: malfunctioning DVD burner. The burner is brand new, so I'm inclined to focus on the Memorex media being the source of my woes. The starnge part is that its only the first attempt to burn the movie that it messes up. On both Shrink and Recode the first attempt is always trash and the second attempt is perfect. I'm out of ideas here, people :(

Are you using Windows XP and if you are go to msconfig and shut off everything in startup. Then try to burn. Sometime other programs affect the burning especially an antivirus program. You dont want any programs running in the backgound when you are burning. Hope this helps you

The only Memorex I've IDed were CMC (some Verbatim's are also CMC), a crap shoot at best.

Verbatim sometimes uses Ritek for some it's discs.

The moral of the story is to not kick around names like Verbatim (which could be Ritek, CMC, Taiyo Yuden and MMC among others. Get DVDInfo Pro(free) and find out the true maker of the disc. Nero will also provide the info and both apps have burn quality tests you can run.

I went and bought a 3 pack of Verbatim DVD-R. All three burns were perfect. Guess it is the Memorex media. Gonna go get 3 more to be sure.

Is there another program that reveals the maker of your DVDs? That DVDinfo tool contains adware components if you don't pay for it. Thanks :)

Okay I used the method you suggested and the this is what it said they were CMC MAG AF1. I guess these are crap, right? I also did the Nero DVD speed test and the average was 3.98x.

Never heard of them!!
I tried Princo,Memorex,& Circuit cities LiquidVideo. They all gave me Problems!!!write error,Bad Clusters,etc..I've got about 100 of these, that once they are no longer playable on my DVD Player,I won't be able to make copies of.Thats the sad part.
Also u figure u end up paying just as much for this crap, when u gotta pay taxes on the full retail price. Before rebates.Plus the coasters u end up with.U are definetly better off paying $.95 ea for a100 pack & no tax.But sometimes a little shipping
I'm real HAPPY w/Ritek A04 4x...My first 40 were clean & no coasters.Hopefully I won't have any in my first 100.But even if I do end up w/a few coasters, the fact that they burn so clean is a trenendece asset

The important thing in this test is not the speed (test a backup you've burned), it's a nice clean line you want with as few dips as possible, and it has to go all the way to the red line (the end) without a drop off. If you did the test with a blank, the 3.98X you got tells you Nero will burn that disc at 4X.

I usually start with the bottom of the stack, this seems to be were most problems seem to pop up. If those burn well the whole spindle should. And if you are looking to save a dime, the RitekG03's (2X) go for about $80/100 delivered. The bulk of my burns are G03's and the results are excellant.

I ran the test and all the working DVDs I made are smooth and don't show any flaws. I'm glad it was the media as I really didn't feel like cracking open the PC again :) The thing that still puzzles me is why it always screws the first burn attempt up, but the second attempt is flawless.
