Sorry if this has been asked before but is there any difference between Component or HDMI on the xbox 360??

Component won't run 1080p, hdmi will run 1080p.... I think that's the only difference other than the hdmi cable will have better quality supposedly. I can't tell the difference, 720p is 720p and 1080i is 1080i as far as the rest of the world is concerned.

i'd say there is a difference even in 720p. hdmi has a lot smoother texture. for example if you play far cry 2, in the beggining scene, the tall grass swaying in the wind looks alot better with hdmi than component.

hdmi would always be better, if you have the option to choose between the two. hdmi is just usually pricier also.

Eh the cable might support it but i've never seen a launch console run 1080p. XCM even made a little converter so you can run 1080p, but i doubt the cable by itself will do it. I wouldn't believe anything you see as far as ms goes. I know for a fact you can't run 1080p with the supplied component cables and a non hdmi xbox.

ya with my xbox 360 i run HDMI out to my TV and I use the s-video cable which has an optical port to run digital audio to my receiver...
its very nice cause it gives a great pictures and true 5.1 surround sound to my receiver

A component cable will support 1080p. The problem is that there are VERY few hdtv's which support 1080p via component.
And with out a doubt, I too have noticed much better video quality on my 50" Samsung with HDMI at 1080p vs. component at 720p and 1080i, and even rgb at 1920x1080.

never seen a difference on the xbox 360 thye both look the same to me and same wiht the PS3 but the blue ray movies looked good wiht HDMI on the PS3 so i'm guessing the HDDVD will look good on the 360 but for games I DIDN'T SEE A DIFFERENCE

want to see if i understand you correctly, you run audio out from tv to receiver? just wondering because i never thought about doing that, i use component only because my receiver doesnt support hdmi as its older

the problem with running audio out of the TV is that it most likely won't pass the 5.1 surround channels properly. this is what I ran into on my pioneer kuro, it has optical audio out but i believe it only passes stereo audio out to the receiver.
what I am using right now is a hack to give me optical audio out from the xbox 360 to my receiver as well as HDMI video to my TV. you have to modify the end connector of the xbox 360 cable so it will fit into the socket when the HDMI cable is also inserted. this guy has a website documenting how to do it along with pictures::

so what i get is the best of both worlds... full dobly digital 5.1 surround directly from the xbox360 to my receiver ... and HDMI video from the xbox360 to my TV

Just remove the plastic case from your 360 component cables. Removing the case will let the hdmi cable and component cable fit in together. Then you can use the hdmi for video and optical for audio.

Gotcha.
Cheap solution to that... pick a second 360 hd cable. They're easily found used for $10-$15. Remove the case from that one. It's still a lot cheaper than buying the audio dongle.

My brother in law has an HDMI compatible tv and my god does the picure look beautiful when running his 360 in HDMI. It looks so crisp and clear that its basically cheating in my book.

I was a little more when I looked at the site... 16 +ship. but when I did a quick search I saw this one. 6.95 with free shipping. just the cord, but still a pretty good deal.

yes if you're going to buy standard cables ... like HDMI, DVI, ethernet, USB, etc etc always go through monoprice... they are like a godsend when it comes to those things.
