Ok, I know NOTHING about PS3 (or any console for that matter). I want a Bluray player for my new Samsung 58" plasma. I was going to get this but it's out of stock:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddet...10112318&catid=

The PS3 is the same price.

Basically I want a BluRay player that:

- Plays BluRay (duhh)
- Plays DIVX files (I have 1200+ divx movies)
- has a USB port so I can play divx movies off my USB drives

That's basically IT!

Is a PS3 comparable to that Panasonic BluRay player linked above? Are PS3 consoles good for playing Bluray or are there a lot of issues with playback of movies?

Need help!!! Figured this was THE place to ask :)

Ok, I just found out it DOES support Divx.

DOes anyone know if it'll play HD (720p/1080p) divx files? For instance, my Pioneer DVD player will play any divx I throw at it, but will NOT play any HD divx files.

it plays almost anything, i have a lot HD divx/xvid movies and PS3 plyas them just fine.
IMO buy PS3 much more features than a stand alone BD player and maybe the best upscaler.

Yah it seems the more reviews I read about it and see on youtube, the more spectacular it seems as a bluray player. I think it has wireless too? So I might even be able to stream divx movies right off my desktop here into the other room to my PS3 and onto my 58" plasma :)

I'm just wondering about the controllers - someone mentioned somewhere that you need internet connectivity to enable them with the PS3 ?? Sounds like something I'll screw up if I'm left to figure it out myself as I've never owned a console of any kind (well, an INtellivision 25 yrs ago :)

yeah you can use tversity, Nero, windows media player and more to stream your videos to your ps3.
the controllers are bluetooth. just pair them first through usb and your good to go.

HMmm, I've never used any bluetooth devices before so I don't know what 'pairing' is, but I'm sure it's not hard to figure out. I'll be going out tomorrow to hopefully pick one up. My 58" plasma just came in today and it's hooked up and waiting :)

Sorry if i read your post wrong but if your talking about the ps3 blu ray remote(blue tooth) you dont need the internet to connect it to your ps3. There are instructions with it. There are directions in the setting menu of the ps3 which will search for the remote. Also the hard drive of the PS3 is a 5400 rpm laptop hard drive. I pain $100 buck for my 320 gig hard drive thats in my ps3. Now you can get a 500 gig hard drive for the same price. Its easy to remove(get precision screw drivers the really small ones). I convert my dvds to mp4 videos and put them on the hard drive so i dont have to exchange disks

Yah it was actually a lot easier than I thought. Took me 10 seconds to add the bluray remote :) I didn't know there was practically support built into the PS3 unit for it :)

Nice. I might upgrade the drive later as they're just 2.5" drives which are easy to find, but I'm going to fidget with that TVersity program and see if I can just stream my DivX stuff from my desktop straight to the PS3. Actually I have about 200 DVDs with about 5-6 divx movies on them each which it seems to play fine, and the USB ports in the front of the PS3 are nice too as I can probably just take my 500gb external usb drive full of movies I haven't burnt yet and plug it in.

So far I've been VERY impressed with this PS3. I bought it soley for a bluray player and the DivX support has been great. I haven't tried a regular DVD to see what the HDMI upconversion is like, but will do so tonight. I was also very happy to get it connected to my local wireless LAN and see it's got a built in web browser, and that it'll take any USB mouse and keyboard and they work instantly after plugging in.

GREAT unit so far. I have no idea why EVERYONE wouldn't just pay the extra cash and use this for playing blurays instead of shelling out a bit less for a standalone bluray player and loose out on the TON of features it has!

Glad you like it. If you get a drive i suggest one that is 5400 rpm. Some people say a 7200 rpm drive is fine others say a 7200 drive draws more heat so i stuck with a 5400.

Yah most laptop drives are 5400 so they're not TOO bad depending on what you're doing. But with the size of the PS3 unit, an extra INCH to go from 2.5 to 3.5 and a small fan wouldn't have been a bad idea for their designers to go with. Not to mention the speed and price difference of 3.5" drives over 2.5".
