I have a 60GB PS3 that is maxed it with movies and music.

I just received a Samsung 320GB HDD (NewEgg...$59.99 shipped), and it is sitting next to my 60GB model....ready to go in.

However, today I won a 40GB PS3 (that does not read disks right now) on E-bay that will go upstairs and I will simply want to drop the old 60GB HDD into the 40GB PS3.

My question(s) is/are this?

1.) Can I drop a "preformatted" HDD into the "new" PS3 and not loose anything? I'll upgrade the firmware right off the bat, but I really don't want to loose the movies and music.

2.) Can two PS3's be connected to one another directly....via USB cable? I figure that would be the "fastest" way to transfer files from one another. I didn't purchase an external 2.5 inch HDD enclosure because....well...I'm cheap...and I wasn't sure if the $10 ones would work with the PS3. I also don't do any streaming. I used to use Nero...but it was too buggy.

Thanks

Wel in order to drop a preformatted drive in, you'll have to REMOVE the current drive that's in there, so obviously you'll loose whatever is on the current drive that's in there (since it won't BE in there)

Give it a shot - they might just see each other as external drives.

Well both your PS3s will have their own enclosures anyway. So just swap out your new (blank) 40gb drive and pop in the new big one you bought.

ps. PS3 hard drives MUST be formated as FAT32 file systems.

Thanks for responding.

For issue #2, I'll let everyone know once the 2nd PS3 arrives. If the two PS3's, can talk directly to each other, that would be great. I was just hoping that someone had already tried and confirmed it.

For issue #1, I'll try to restate what I posted in a less confusing manner.

I have a fully functional 60GB PS3 (with 60GB HDD) that is filled up with movies and music.

I have a brand new 320GB HDD that is still in the package, and will be placed into my 60GB PS3.

I just purchaged a used, non-disk reading 40GB PS3 from ebay (with a 40GB HDD in it that I have no real use for).

I want to put the new 320GB HDD in my original 60GB PS3, then take the filled up 60GB HDD and put it in the 40GB PS3.

Will the 40GB PS3 be able to read everything on the "filled up" 60GB HDD that will be going in it since the 60GB HDD is already "pre-formated"?

I'm hoping all of this works....so that all I have to do is swap/transfer the HDD's, then copy anything I want from the old 60GB HDD (now in the 40GB PS3) to the 320GB PS3 via USB cable.

Keep in mind my "main" PS3 with the soon to be 320GB HDD is an orignal 60GB PS3, so it has BC, and it is also hooked up to my main TV and sound system. The 40GB PS3 that does not play discs right now will be mainly used for movies and music via the hard drive in a bedroom. That why I'm hoping I can "hot swap" this stuff and not lose anything.

Well that really sucks.

That means that I'm going to have to go get an external enclosure so that I can transfer my music and movies from the 60GB HDD to the 320GB HDD fairly quickly.

USB to USB would be so much easier.

This is a good enclosure:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182140

I'm using it for my old 40GB PS3 HDD. Screwlwss design, works great. $15. It is powered off the USB cable. The one that comes with it has 2 USB to 1 mini usb cable. They say that one is for power and one is for transfers. In reality, any USB cable will do. I bought this one for PS3 transfers:

Nice little 1-footer :) Because I realy hate long USB cables.

1.) PantherM was talking about something else, as he made clear. Panther, I believe that the PS3 requires you to format a new drive regardless of whether it's been formatted before or not. So in this case, I'd suggest you just going the enclosure route and transferring from there.

2.) The PS3 hard drives are NOT formatted to fat32 file systems. PS3 hard drives use a formatting specifically designed by Sony. That should be clear if you look at the game data installed - a lot of them exceed the 4GB limit. You would not be able to save that much data into one file on a fat32 formatted drive.

The only thing that needs to be fat32 is EXTERNAL media. Flash drives, external hard drives, etc.

...which makes me wonder if simply plopping your 60GB drive into an enclosure will still allow the PS3 to recognize it. I'm pretty sure it'll still recognize it, but never having done it myself, I can't be too certain.

Thanks for the replies...I kinda bummed that I have to order more stuff...and can't do any swapping of files now. Oh well....it will be another 7 days before the other PS3 gets here anyway.

Newegg has been sucking up all of my money as of late.

I just ordered a cheap Nippon Labs Enclosure on sale for $8.00 with free shipping.

Two weeks ago, I ordered a Dual Shock 3 from them on sale for $43.00 with free shipping....only to watch them drop the price down to $40.00 with free shipping a few days later (it's back to $43.00 BTW).

Once everything is here...I'll respond what what the systems can and can't do before I start reformatting and moving stuff.
