downloaded latest ps3 update and now the ps3 wont play games

downloaded ps3 update version 2.53(i think) and the ps3 wont play games i have tried formating the hard disk and restoring to factory settings and am now restoring the system witch is deleating everything and starting again any advice would be apriciated thanks

If I'm right, you could have simply downgraded to an earlier firmware, right? You'd have had to do it through a flash drive, but you could've tried going back to 2.52 or even 2.50 and seeing if that fixed the problem.

I'm not 100% but I don't think you can downgrade the ps3s firmware.
Does the disc icon appear on your xmb? do you get an error code when trying to start the game? if so then its corrupt data on the hard drive and restoring to factory settings should fix it.

If the ps3 doesn't read the disc or the icon doesn't appear then its a faulty bluray drive and you'll have to call Sony.

Is it just bluray discs that wont work? test it with some cds and dvds.

it actually wont play any disks at all iv tried my 6 games and a couple of dvds but nothing pops up under the games menu or video and music but theres an icon in the top right hand corner of the screen that pops up when you put a disk in i think it means trying to read the disk
but everything eles works all menus pop up its just over a year old ive plugged a usb device in one of the usb ports and you can play the videos and music so i think its the bluray drive thanks for the advice greatly apriciated

Since its firmware that's caused it and not the laser just dying out maybe you could try some options from the recovery menu. it worth a try before you call Sony.

To get to the recovery menu put your ps3 on standby, then hold down the power button until the ps3 turns on then turns off again, when its back in standby hold down the power button again until you hear a double beeb, two beeps one after another. and you'll be in the recovery menu.

try 2, 3 and 4 then when that's done update the firmware through the recovery menu, 6.

cheers guys but its already in the mail to sony still under worenty(excuse my spelling)sony can fix it i rely cant be bothered mucking around untill its out of worenty cheers anyway
