Doesn't it make more sense to add a NAS to your network and pimp up the HD.

I can get a NAS enclosure and put 3 Tera bytes in it for $500 or less and the whole network can access it

I upgrade my PS3 with a 500gig internal and 500 gig external costs approx $350 and only my PS3 can see the stuff.

I guess one question I dont know is can the PS3 access any type or NAS or are there special types?

As well is there something I am missing with why my HD should be bigger?
thanks

I think the NAS unit hdds would still need to be in the sony fat format in order for the ps3 to detect it, which will mean your PCs wont be able to.

Im not sure I havent tried to connect a hdd formatted under ntfs via an enclosure yet, ive been using tversity.

I think the biggest reason to get an internal drive seems to be simply for convenience's sake. It's a bit simpler in terms of how many components you have (the PS3 versus the PS3, the NAS, the PC, the connectors, blah blah blah), which in turn simplifies the space that gets taken up.

I dunno, maybe.

It'd also be faster, no? I mean, having a drive connected via SATA connector would transfer data a lot faster than one through USB or wireless, right?

Granted, this is all just guesswork - I didn't even know what an NAS was until I decided to Google it - but it just seems to be a bit simpler.

I have been reading the threads on the playstation.com forum and yes the NAS can be hooked to the network
DNS-323 dlink is the one I was looking into

the nice thing about a NAS is that no other computers need to be turned on and as long as the format is native to PS3 then it should stream to the PS3 plus you could put other files on it available to the whole network. Really all Media should be put on a NAS.

Any other comments would be welcome.

Im trying to figure if you have to have twonky installed on the NAS to have it stream properly

It looks like the PS3 and 360 can stream right from a NAS like this.

I will be buying one today to try it out. Twonky does not seem to be needed

You could still use your media server of choice to play other files that need to be transcoded

Not used a NAS before so not sure, but are you sure you can install programs onto the NAS? Thought all they were were were hdds that can be connected to a network without the need for a MB, grap card, etc. So basically hdd and a network socket :P

If you can then thats good as you'd be able to transcode files that the PS3 cant recognise, if not then you can play those files :(

NAS isn't bad but the main point of upgrading the internal hard drive is because of either linux or storing game data which adds up a lot quicker than you'd think @ around 2.5-5 gigs a game install. It would be essentially as useful as any old external hdd except you don't have to swap it from thing to thing, which is cool but you also loose the mobility outside your pad.

Its good but it has its equal of ups and downs just like going with an external or internal.

I agree

For gaming saves you need a decent sized interal ps3 harddrive

for Media server Use the NAS and store all media there that the whole network can access

Native PS3 files need to be on that hard drive but if the data doesnt have to be on the PS3 drive it shouldn't be.

Also, I am talking about a wired network not wireless so lag shouldn't be an issue.

Dont forget having a NAS also gives you the option of having TVersity on anther computer and drawing the data from the NAS for decoding.

Im, surprised it isn't chatted about more here.

I was wondering the same thing. However perhaps with a different twist.
Getting an NAS with a USB port. Thus the HDD is connected to the home computer network via the NAS (in this way files are trasferred back and forth from the computers to this HDD) and the PS3 reads the HDD via the USB 2.0 port - in this way there's a faster connection and no lag issues streaming 1080p video over the network.

Let me know what you think.
and what NAS/USB enclosure that you think is good (and cheap!!)
