I have a wii with and just installed the wiikey 2. I have downgraded to 3.2 and have the homebrew channel installed. I am having numerous problems and hopefully the problems are stemming from 1 or 2 things. Here are my problems.

1. Will not read my backup iso's. I have tried about 4 or 5 diferent games. However, Mario Party 8 loads but when I hit "Start", the screen goes black and freezes requiring a manual restart. The rest of the games just say "unable to read disc. All original games work normal.
2. After I eject one disc and try to put in another, it won't take it in. I have to turn off and on to put another disc in.
3. I don't know if it's necessary, but I can't load the Update/Config disc v1.2 for the WiiKey 2.

Besides the problems, the wii works like normal. I think I have the WiiKey 2 installed correctly because it begins to start Mario Party 8. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Your modchip is more then probably installed correctly and working fine, I seriously doubt it is the modchip.

This is a common issue and is almost always a media/burn speed/burner problem. Burn slow from your ISO's like 4x or 6x if your media supports that. Don't use poor media like Dynex, some Memorex and even some Verbatim's. Try a different burner as the one you're using could be marginal in LASER strength or spindle speed.

I like to use Philips or Sony RW's to test my ISO's before burning to my every day media. I know this media works and it eliminates that issue. I personally use "Taiyo Yuden Water Shield White Inkjet Hub Printable 16X DVD-R" they aren't premium media but I like printable glossy media that can be washed with out labels running. This media works very well but because it has Water Shield they are costly.

First, did you install your chip via wires or a clip?

The eject issue you are having is very common for the D2E chipset with D2pro or WiiKey 2. You need to use a different ground point other than the one in the install diagram. Google "alternate earth points Wii" and you will find a picture of where to solder to. Use the "C" point and your eject issue should be solved.

Your ISOs not playing are prolly due to a bad download. You should burn your Wii ISOs on a Verbatim DVD-R at 4X burning speed. If they do not play, they are either bad burns, poor media, bad downloads, etc. If you make your own backups, you will have less issues. Google "GDR-8162" for a DVD-ROM that can read Wii games.

Hope that helps!

The chip is hard-wired.

I have been using Sony and Maxell DVD-R Media. I have burned at 2X, 2.4X, 4X, 6X, 8X. The one game I have that sorta works is Mario Party 8. Its the one that goes black screen after I press start. I tried reburning the same ISO and I can't get it to work again which leads me to believe it is a media, speed, burner issue. I have went through about 35 coasters and am getting kind of frustrated. I use ImgBurn for most because Nero gives me a lot of errors. Should I buy some Verbatim DVD-R's? Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks so far.

A few more questions,

Is the ISO 4.37GB in size?

I would try Verbatim DVD-R disks. Bestbuy has them. I alway burn at 4X with ImgBurn.

A am assuming all of your ISOs are downloaded and not games you have dumped yourself.

Maybe try a different torrent site. I wouldn't be suprised if someone is uploading crappy dumps for people to download.

Do you have any friends with a modded Wii you can take your backups to and verify that they work?

Thanks for the responses.
Yeah, all of the ISO's are 4,699,979,776 bytes. I'm gonna get some Verbatim discs and see how that goes. I don't know anybody with a modded wii. Thanks again

sturdi,

Same questions apply. Are you using Verbatim DVD-R media? Are they dumped or downloaded ISOs?

All ISOs should be burned at 4x. and on Verbatim DVD-R media. IMHO

May also have a burner issue like I had once.

OK, so I got my Verbatim DVD-R's. I burn at 2x and 4x on my laptop and my external DVD burner. None work. Trying to eliminate the bad ISO problem, I burnt the Update/Config disc v1.2 for the WiiKey 2. That should be a perfectly fine ISO coming straight from the WiiKey website. When I burn it, the says the same thing. "Unable to read disc". Is there something I'm missing. I think the chip is installed correctly. I have the HBC installed and downgraded to 3.2. Thanks

if the chip is installed corectly and you changed media and burn speed the chip itself could just be a bad one. it sucks but it does happen. My original wiikey was like that. i installed it played one back up then nothing would work. i took it out and everything worked fine.

If you have the homebrew channel i would try to use one of the boot loaders. if your back ups work with those then it is the chip. if it doesnt work with the bootloaders then they are bad dumps or bad media.
i would recomend loading your boot loader of choice. preferably wiigators Gamma loader. then put the disc in and try to load it from there. this should tell you whether its a bad chip or bad burn. hope this helps.

SUCCESS! Well, sort of. I burned the Wiikey config disc on my wife's laptop. I put it in the WII and it freakin worked. I did this all very quickly because I had to leave my house for 4 days. I fly for Continental and I'll be back on Saturday. I hope the game ISO's work as well. Quick question.. I have about 20 iso's on my computer but I need to burn them on my wife's computer. What would be the easiest and fastest way to transfer to hers and then burn. Thanks for all the help.

invest in an external hard drive as best to keep- safe discs get scratched and number will rise, when im burning mine i disabale everything so never had any errors ever and im couple years in, no wifi, no antivirus ect ect i close everything i can then start the burns, had few marathon 100-200 burns at 4x speed god that was nightmare lol good when get to playing lol

you may still get after you take game out the drive wont take another as semi bricks on rare occasions, but you simply just switch off then back on hey presto but can the guys say same using the likes of the zelda exploit? ive seen 2 bricked machines with this now and theres no recovery for it unlike with mod chip......:)

I don't have the sources on me but do not burn too slow. Burning too slow can be just as bad as burning extremely fast.

It was a good idea to burn slow on the older generations DVD burners but times have change. Burning 2x or such would be putting stress on the lens really.

6x or 8x is where its fine.

I have about 20 iso's on my computer but I need to burn them on my wife's computer. What would be the easiest and fastest way to transfer to hers and then burn.

If you go the external HD route, make sure you format that external HD to NTFS and not Fat 32.

I'd take one of your backups, rip it on the wifey's pc using ImgBurn/read. Her PC has to be able to recognize those backups. If it does recognize your backups, then should take 5 mins to rip to her HD. Then burn the ISO with ImgBurn and test it out on your Wii.

For regular dvd backups, all dvd-rw drives are different. Some burners yield highly compatable backups, some very low compatable backups.Booktyping drives takes care of that issue.
Quality media is a must, and try both formats to decide which format a certain drive likes. This holds true in the world of Wii backups. I also found out this on my Bro's modded Wii. A game I gave him that was booktyped dvd-rom and played perfect for me,couldn't be read in his drive. His dvd-rw drive favors the dash format because his Plus backups yield very low compatability. I'm still teaching him about booktyping and he does have an LG drive..

Sturdi: If you have a plus format only drive, then she's ancient.Check on the latest firmware version and update to it.. Your buddy can play your Wii games, but you can't. This goes under the "All dvd Drives are Different"category. What works good on 1 drive, may not on another. Having a plus format only drive, you have very limitted flexibility for compatability. You may want to check out the dvd-rw drives forum and see what the high quality dvd-rw drives that are available and then check them out at newegg.com. Should be able to fetch a quality burner for well under $40

Hello, first of all..I'd like to thank all the intelligent users, sharing useful information with us "not so smart" people. This is my first post, I can normally find information by reading the forums, and have found a few that might fit my problem...but I'm gonna take and chance and see if someone has had this problem.

I recently installed a wiikey 2 w/wiiclip solderless in my d2c drive. Installation was a breeze, everything was working great. I followed one of the video tutorials, I had a preburned backup of "Animal Crossing: City Folk", that I had prepared using one of the drives listed in another forum. I tested the game before I started and of course, I got the error. Then I installed the wiikey 2
then tested the drive before reassembling the wii. It worked beautifully...I was delighted. I carefully reassembled the wii and tried the game again, and it still worked great. I then tried another back up of "Zelda: Twilight Princess". This time it would not work. I tried the first game again, it still works fine. So, I go back and try the Zelda game again, and it still doesn't work. I used the same media (TDK DVD+R). I have a variety of disks, so I tried a Verbatim DVD-R, and a Memorex. I've tried different speeds using Imgbrn, checked the file size of the ISO...4.37. Ok, I'm a little frustrated, so I decided to try some other games....no other backups will work, just the first one which was "animal crossing".
Then, after reading forums...I checked my firmware, which indicated I had 3.3 and not yet been updated to 3.4. Using my original zelda disk, i set up the homebrew channel..and tried to downgrade to 3.2, as some forums indicated wiikey2 had problems above v3.2. After the downgrade, my firmware is showing v3.2U (I have no idea why the U has been added). Well, I still have the same problem. I've tried backing up my daughter's PETZ DOGZ 2 and have the same effect...only the first backup that I created will work. I'm sorry for the long post, but I wanted to indicate everything I had done. Thanks for any suggestions.

+r realy? lol sorry for being rude some games work some dont with +r and seriously worst case of discs to buy so here goes with big tip, -r and only minus arr me good lad and 4x speed and zelda will play pretty lol seriously pal use only -r never use +r if can be avoided, usualy you will get read error at some point of game with +r, so i shall say again -r writing at 4 x speed means good disc as long as iso is good, matters not if you dumped it or downloaded it there always chance its not perfect even if the correct size

Thanks...I'm going to grab some different disks on my way home from work and try them on a different burner. I'm a little concerned about the wii's firmware though...the original firmware was 3.3, then 3.2U after the downgrade, does the U at the end make a difference?...What are the symptoms of a semi-brick?....thanks again

well, I didn't know about inserting an original disk after installation, until after I had already tested the back up. So you think it would be safe to go ahead and let the wii update to the latest version?
I appreciate all your help, and will try to clean up my mess once I get home....guess I should have made sure I read everthing before attempting this.. got a little too brave.

no harm done by sounds of it you just doing and going through what we all did at start :)
to activate region free simply download as said the torrent file from wiikey makers website run torrent to download rar file unpack will be larger when unpacked and write the iso you get to dvd minus and run will let you check and change settings of your chip....
i just updated a wiikey v1 console online running latest wii firmware and installed the wiikey v1 1.9x firmware on chip and that is running everything also no issues,,,,wiikey runs everything flawless except issues with dvd+ and some discs wrote at higher speeds such as i can get one to run all day on one but wont load on other ect this seems to be to do with wii drive chipset and not chip such as dual layer games like super smash brawl especialy consoles around the leh1550-leh1800 range, but if one loads and others dont issue with others as none would load full stop and one that did at best would be tempremental......spoke to tons of people with your exact same issue always solved 100% we will get you there in end 100% kk
