Hi everyone,

For various reasons, I need to be able to play divX files on my PS3 (mainly because this is the only format that the PS3 will allow with switchable subtitles - it seems to refuse all attempts to use MP4 with switchable subs).

Anyway, I'm aware that aviaddxsub does a good job of wrapping up the subtitles in a nice divx container, but this is still no guarantee of the file working, because the PS3 appears to be horrendously picky about its divX codecs etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone has managed to come up with a blueprint, a tester, a heap of standard settings that are perfectly in line with what the PS3 wants from a divX file?

If someone has, and/or you know anything, I'd be really grateful for any pointers. I'm getting tired of testing files in divX player on my PC (successfully), then burning them to CD, only to have the PS3 spit them back in my face with an unsupported data error...

Hope someone can help!

I haven't had any problems playing DivX, Avi, or Mpeg4.
Do you have the most recent updates for the PS3?

I have tons of problems running divx on my ps3: most are fixable. I typically source them off of a 1.5TB PC. I use Nero MEdiahome as the server sw.

My typical hurdle is in keeping the video sizes below 4GB. The PS3 will not accept anything larger than 4GB in size. Easy to do for 2 hour movies - tougher for longer ones. You could try cranking down your bitrates a bit to the minimum tolerable video quality. Another thing I found is that my ripper/encoder - for whatever reason - tends to produce unusable output files with higher bitrates. I found that I can readily fix this by fixing up the files using a program (freely available) called virtualdub.

I found that I can get a playable video 95% of the time after scooting the bitrate to keep the filesize <4GB and running virtualdub to resync the keyframes etc. The other 5% are messed up with the exact same audio sync problem - where it is 500ms (maybe 480ms) too early. I haven't been able to resync the audio without causing the output file to be corrupted.

In a nutshell - look at your bitrate (i.e. resultant filesize) and check out virtualdub.

Have you tried using MeGUI + Avisynth to re-encode your videos? I believe MeGUI has many codec profiles that are specifically geared towards being played on the PS3/360/DVD players/etc.

After that, I'm sure adding subtitles would simply be a matter of muxing them into the DivX file.

...actually, never mind. I believe the only MPEG-4 codec it accepts is Xvid, since that one's free.

I'm not sure about DivX. If you absolutely need the subtitles, I suppose you COULD simply hardsub the video.

And if you're creating simple DivX movies and playing them on the PS3, I'd definitely suggest you get a flash drive. They are much more handy than CDs, and you save money and the environment at the same time. Just save the file onto the flash drive and stick it in your PS3, and you should be able to watch it (or test it) on your PS3.
