Hi guys/girls, I wonder if you could help me with this:

I am about to buy a 80Gb PS3 console.

Is it true that if you have a MP4 file (e.g. in the Hard Drive), the PS3 will not play 5.1 channels. I have the file (MP4) and an extra AC3 file in the same folder. Will the PS3 use both files?

Kind of lost over here... Totally newbie... Sorry...

Thanks!

I think you'd do good by PMing Ryu77 or odin24, as they're the two I know who know the most about what video/audio the PS3 supports.

If I'm right, it depends wholly on the file format of the audio stream. And I believe it plays stereo AC3 audio just fine.

I will reformat the question, here is the thing:

I am about to buy the new PS3 80GB.

My Video Set: Brand New 40" LCD TV Series 6 Samsung Full HD 120Hz

My Audio: I have a 5.1 Sony Home Theater (DAV-BC150)no HDMI just 1 RCA Input. According to the manual it decodes Dolby Digital, DTS or STD 2 Ch.

My question is the following

If I play a VOB (converted from a MKV using MKV2VOB and it) or MP4 file which I will place on the PS HDD or external Western Digital 2.5" HDD Fat32, will the sound of the played file be stereo?

According to MediaInfo, the VOB file I am talking about:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Video
ID : 4113 (0x1011)
Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec

Nominal bit rate : 5 460 Kbps

Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Bit rate : 640 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I am planning to hook the PS3 via HDMI to the HDTV and use a the A/V cable to connect only the audio into the Sony. Basically I don´t know if I could do this. The file will be played in stereo or 5.1?

Anyways, suppose I connect the PS3 to the HDTV and now I have a HDMI A/V Receiver. The file will be played in stereo or 5.1?

TIA

I figured that's what you were talking about, but still... I don't know much about how the PS3 interacts with sound systems. I still get my audio through the TV's stereo speakers. Hah hah, I know.

Which is why I suggest you PM one of those two. They'll probably know more about it than I do. My first guess is that yes, it'll support 5.1 AC3 audio, but that's all it is: a guess.

That said, you could just pop it into your PS3's hard drive and see for yourself.

I have never played a VOB file on the PS3, but it should play 5.1 surround sound fine provided you are hooked up correctly to your Sony sound system. Keep in mind, if you are using a FAT32 drive your media file cannot be larger than 4GB.

Since you do not have an HDMI receiver your only option is to connect by an optical cable, this is the only way to get surround sound. If for some reason VOB will not play 5.1 sound m2ts will.
