Hi, i'm trying to use mkv2vob to convert mkv video files containing x264, DTS and AC3 etc to M2TS and VOB to play on a PS3, if i select Xvid as my codec it starts and then gives a message cannot detect file type, is Xvid compatible, it works with MPEG-2.

So far no M2TS or VOB files i've converted have played on my nephews PS3, i only get the sound or it can't detect the video file and a lot of the time when using mkv2vob to convert files there's nothing in the out-put folder.

Is this because the files i'm converting contain x264 etc, thanks

The PS3 is able to play most x264-encoded AVC streams. If you want to use an easier program (in my experience, anyway), then try tsMuxer and choose the M2TS option.

If the PS3 doesn't see the video, though, it's likely because it was encoded using profile settings that the PS3 can't handle. In this case, the only option you'd have is to re-encode using MeGUI or VDubMod.

I hope that answers (some of) your questions.

Hi, again, forgot to ask, i was thinking about getting a PS3, would it play a data dvd disk of the converted video file and would the quality be very good, or would i have to use an external hard drive or usb stick.

I was looking for a way to avoid the Fat32 limitation as getting my larger files on to the PS3, over 4GB, is difficult and time consuming.

Also i was looking for a good program to reduce the size of my larger x264 video files, would the megui program do this and is there much quality lose, can you recommend a good program, thanks again.

1. Yes, the PS3 plays Data DVDs just fine. The only thing is that, again, the movie has to be PS3-compatible.

2. Sticking a movie onto a dual-layer (or even single-layer) DVD is possible, so long as you have a dual-layer burner.

3. MeGUI is very good at re-encoding to specific filesizes (I believe it is, after all, just a GUI, with the actual work coming from... some other program). All you have to do is go to Tools-->Bitrate Calculator, and limit the resultant video to a specific size. The quality loss is almost completely dependent on the profile you use - if you use a high-quality profile, you should lose very little to no quality. If you use a fast, one-pass profile, then you'll lose a lot of quality. A lot of the things that apply to DivX and Xvid apply to x264.

Thanks again for your experienced advice, it's much appreciated and most helpful, i couldn't decide between a PS3, Popcorn Hour A110, or the cheaper WD Media player.

As the PS3 is only £70 to £80 more then the popcorn i thought it might be worth te extra money as you get Blu-Ray etc, but was concerned about it's media potential.

I've read you have to use the right dvd media and burning software to have a better chance of the PS3 playing data dvd's, i have burned films up to 7.5GB on daul layer dvd 9 media so i take it my burner is a dual layer burner.

Thanks again, it's given me lots to think about and hopefully i can watch my HD video files on the PS3 in there original resolution and quality.
