Hi , i have resent had a problem with my blue ray drive would not read media such as, blue ray movies, games, dvds ,and cds. So I bought a new blue ray drive off ebay that had its own controller board connected to the drive already. I was really worried about if this board was going to sync to my PS3 MOTHERBOARD, on Every forum on the internet they say you have to change out your controller board that came with your ps3 blue ray drive, because the controller board is keyed or locked to that ps3, which isn't true READ BELOW!! FROM SONY TECH SUPPORT TODAY!!

I decided to get the balls to call sony myself, and ask them the question "can i swap this drive for mine with a controller board attach to it, and will my ps3 recongize it"?

The answer is: YES the controller boards on the back of the drive are not keyed to that pacific* [don't you mean "specific" ;) ~ Oner] motherboard on that ps3, so anyone who is buying a drive and gets a controller board with it you don't have to swap your controller board to that drive it will work!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!! __> ONLY TIME YOU HAVE TO SWAP IS IF YOU PS3 DRIVE YOU BOUGHT OFF EBAY DOESN't COME WITH A CONTROLLER BOARD ATTACHED!!!

()---------------------------------------------------------------()
I will be testing this out to see if it works in a week, but i am pretty sure it'S going to work, because i talk to sony MYSELF ASKED THE QUESTION WITH A GREAT ANWSER!!---()
-------------------------------------------------------------------

i WOULD ADVISE TO STICKY THIS POST THANK YOU :)

does that mean if we got an issue with a dead bluray drive or not properly working drive, just buy a brand new drive WITH the controller board attached, replace, and its all good to go no problems and hassle free?

i can confirm that this is totally false, I ordered a controller card and put the working drive with that controller board on my working board an it would not read the media, or even play demos.

you sure you didnt call sany instead of sony?

YES i called sony 1800 345 7669 and they told me it will work. I said yeah to them that is what i thought, because if sony made all these different controller boards for these blue ray drives it wouldn't be that effective. YES THEY ARE NOT KEYED!

I had tech agent check for me on it and they said i can swap the drive with no problem with that circuit controller board on it, but yes i will soon. I still hope it works too, because i want to get my ps3 working again.

One thing I still don't get, Been reading about all this talk about it with no definitive answer, but if sony claims that it is doable, then why is it every post I read attempted and failed? or is there something a little extra to actually make it work? (not that I own a PS3 anyways, but very interested in this stuff cause I will own one soon and want it to be problem free)

I am not quite sure but she told me it will swap with no problem. IF this is a problem i will be calling them first thing. They said the drives are not keyed and long as it is a sony ps3 controller board it will work. She said there is no reason for me to put my ps3 controller from my ps3 onto the drive because they are the samething

You can always ask sony yourself i mean it doesn't seem like they care if you ask those type of questions. number is 1800 345 7669

Just so we are cleard, the drives itself it not keyed to the motherboard or the controller board. but the controller board is keyed to the motherboard unless you can reprogram the nand chip on the controller board to match the motherboard.

Its been tried many times and it does not work believe me.

Well i said i had a 80gb ps3 and i am putting a drive with a controller already attach from a mgs4 80gb console. I ask her the question can i use this controller on my ps3 and will it be keyed or locked to my motherboard, because i have heard people say on forums that they are infacted keyed or locked to the motherboard of that console and there is no way to get around it. The only way is to use that controller that came with that console. They told me straight up i will have no problem swaping out my drive for that drive with the controller ATTACHED, so why would they lie if its not true? I mean the tech agent check for me on it. Sony is more helpful then you think if you ask the right questions.

I also said that this drive isn't like mine it is new and has a silver back that protects the drive controller and i said mine is on the outside and the answer is still the same.

just how you cannot swap drives on the Xbox 360 without spoofing it is the same, unlike the xbox the drive itself on the ps3 is not keyed but the controller board attach to it is,

Until there is a way to get the infomation from the controller card to it can be spoofed on another controller board it will not work.

So I will stay shut and wait for you to tell me if it worked or it didn't.

I think the person that told you that swapping the drives on the ps3 deviated from their scripts and should not have said anything that would lead you to open your ps3.

I received my drive today and it doesn't seem to work. I am not sure if it did pair with my motherboard or not. It does the same thing my other drive does, wont read cds, dvd, and games. It always has that information circle running in the right hand corner of the screen.

I will be posting a video soon i am converting it now.

While I won't argue with you that Sony told you that you could swap the drive, you have to remember that you were not speaking with a techie person, probably a level 4 tech support person that does all the troubleshooting stuff

I have heard that you need to flash the NAND but I cannot find anyway to do this or how to do this.

I would think if you could flash the nand then you could switch from the kem400 to the kem410

The BR drive boards are being sold everywhere but I have no idea how people would be using them

I would have to agree with your last comment. How ever what if we accidentally fired out controller board in a accident. IE I had my ps3 luged in and running to trouble shoot the drive and my top of the br drive was on my psu I was holding it up, might have let the controlor board hit the consol and heard a pop. Then I tried a different controller board and got the finger of destiny. We need that master knowlage sticky.

i replaced my controller board with a differen't one and its now working. mind you all of the drives were out of the older ones that have the backwards capability. the only thing i noticed on the controllers was 2 of my drives have samsung chips and one had a differen't one can't remember what it is called and don't want to pull my ps3 apart to check what the name is. the 3rd controller is the one that worked. take that for what its worth.

Hi guys, i can confirm from my experience.

I got two 60GB PS3, one with a dead motherboard which i cannot fix (YLOD then i fried it by melting it in the oven DOH).

anyway, i found another one with a defective blue ray, disk reading error. DVD, blue ray, games, nothng would read. it was not software or HDD related as i formatted, tried a new HDD and did every recovery option available.

so i switched the blue ray players. First, the same errors occurred so i got scared, did some searches, then decided to try switching the blue ray controller card.

guess what, the system is 100% working now.

so you can buy an ebay blue ray if yours is dead, but you will need to swap in your own controller card.

PM me if you need any help.
