The upgrade notes with DVD Shrink v3.1.7 beta 3 say that it can perform ISO file backup and burn with DVD Decrypter option. However, I can't find a DVD Decrypter option in DVD Shrink v3.1.7b3. Is it possible to burn DVDs with only DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter?

Hi bryanjunk,

I haven't looked into v3.1.7, but yes, you can burn only using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. You just need this handy little utility called ImgTool Classic, you can get it from here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/imgtool_classic.cfm

What you do is use DVD Shrink to create the DVD folders unto your hd, then open up ImgTool, select the folders created with shrink. The program will create an image of the files and automatically open DVD Decrypter and burn that image to the disc. It's very simple to use and all software is free!! Hope this helps!

Have fun!

Thank you. This will come in handy I'm sure. However, I got the impression that the new version of DVD Shrink would automatically start burning to DVD using Decrypter after encoding, much like it does with the Nero burn option turned on. Maybe I was hoping for too much. It sounds like the process you described is a two step process. I was hoping for a more automaic process where you put the DVD in and the blank in and come back to find a burned copy.

Thank you again,

As I said, I haven't looked into the new beta version yet, so your hopes may still come true! ;)

The process I mentioned sounds like a two step thing, but it's not. ImgTool will automatically open DVD Decrypter and do the burning.

But, even easier and faster to use is ImgTool Burn, also a free tool, you'll get it here.

http://users.evtek.fi/~samulib/SetupImgTool_1.1.1.exe

You simply select the folder containing the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, select burning speed and press "Burn". It couldn't possibly be more simple than that ;) (unless the new beta version of Shrink even automates this step, of course)

I hope this helps!

i have used the latest version of dvdshrink, and it burns with dvdencrypter directly. basically pop 1 dvd in my dvd-rom and blank in external burner and 1 1/2 hour later comes out a backup dvd. Burn an image onto your hard drive, and check off the burn with encrpter at the bottom.

There you go, bryan, your dreams have just come true. :)
I for one will not use the direct burning option, since I always want to check the quality of the compressed movie before I burn. If neccessary, I then adjust the settings or use other methods of copying if the quality is not acceptable for me, but usually it is, so then I do the burning with ImgTool Burn.

Thank you Kenji and Ketale. I see now that you must select "Iso Disc Image" for the target device and then the option to burn with DVD Decrypter is there. So far, DVD Shrink has done such an excellent job for me that I have completely abandoned the use of the DVD X Copy series. Now reauthoring, encoding and burning can be had by running one (really two) free programs. Dreams do happen. Thanks again

Hi ketale,
Thanks for your suggestion on using DVDShrink then Imgtool Classic to burn using DVD Decrypter. It works!
However, tried with Imgtool Burn, which you said was easier, but it seems to want Nero installed to be able to work.Any ideas?

I have used DVDshrink with DVD Decrypter but before I can write it to DVD I get a message at the bottom that says "Device not ready (Medium not present)". What does that mean and why is it preventing me from doing the final step ?

Im new to burning dvds, and have been using dvd-x copy. Im attempting to copy Scarface Anniversary Edition, but it is a 2 disc set, and xpress fails when it is finalizing on both discs. Reads it fine, writes it, then when it is almost done it says burn failed. I checked into DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, but I dont have Nero. I have roxio easy cd/dvd creator that came with my burner (tdk 440n). Any suggestions on what to do??

Dominoe, Thats the message Decrypter gives you when it is ready to burn. Do you have your blank media in your burner?

zachzchw, Usually when burns fail at the end it is a media problem. Try changing to a higher quality brand. I have had good luck with Verbatim and Memorex. Ritek G-04 gets great reviews here at AD.

If you have Shrink 3.1.7b5 and DVD Decrypter, you can use them both to make a burned copy.
Just make an ISO image with Shrink. When you select Backup it asks for the target, Select ISO Image. Let Shrink do it's thing.
I disable burning with Nero under Preferences but I don't know if that matters.

When Shrink is finished, open Decrypter, click on Mode, select ISO> ISO Write. Browse for the ISO folder Shrink made and select it, put your blank disc in and click on the Decrypter icon. (A burner with an arrow pointing at a disc.) The burn process should start.

Frank, thanks so much!!! Tried just what you said, worked perfectly!! I did get an error message at the beginning, but I hit ignore, and just tried out the dvd. Perfect playback! What sucks is that I actually paid $40 for dvd x copy!!

Yo Frank I wish it was that easy but yes, I did have a blank DVD in my burner. And it's a Memorex. I've already spent 4 nights on this and am getting to the point where I may just give up. I know my burner works because I've been burning CD's on it.

Hi Dominoe,

I always have to suggest the easiest possible solution IAW the information I have.

The next easiest answer for you would to be to suggest trying a different brand of media. You did not say if you have had any success with Memorex in the past.
Is this +R or -R media? What is the make and model of your burner? OS?

Can you see the disc in explorer?
Heres a tool to try:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

You can check your media, drives and other stuff with it.

Hi newbie76,

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to make Shrink do. Shrink 3.1.7b5 can create an ISO folder as an output, using DVD-Video compliant files from a disc or from your hard drive. This works with 3.1.7b3 and up only not the other versions.

Your media and burner are just fine, however I need to know whats happening at the front of your process.

I will suggest that you start a new thread, with a complete description of your process, so that a bunch more of us can see it.
You will get more help that way!

Cheers,
Frank

Gentlemen,

Memorex makes Excellent Cassette tapes but their DVD's Do Not have constant quality ! As high a figure as 50 % has been reported with the norm a lot lower for poor quality Discs.

Ritek G04 or Verbatim are a constant good quality. Also the products boasting metal AZO dye is of above average quality (unfortunately, the price for this media is pretty darn high :-(

Hello all. Ive been using shrink and DVD Decrypter to burn with, and I scan through all the chapters on my computer (and they all seem fine). I attempted to play a dvd on a buddy's dvd player, which is an emerson that he got about 3 years ago. We tried a few different dvd's, and they all skipped. The best way to describe it is, they pause, play, pause, play-very glitchy. Is there a "blacklist" for these programs, or could it just be his dvd player? (He plans on purchasing a new one soon.) Thanks for the help.

All right Frank, here it is. My make/model is NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A and I'm using Memorex DVD-R. As I've never burned before I can't say I've had success in the past. Not to sound dumb (remember I'm a newbie)but the link you provided indicated my system has DVD+R/DVD+RW supported write features. Is that why I'm getting "Device not ready (Medium not present)" at the bottom of the DVD Decrypter window ?

Hi Dominoe,

Getting media your burner supports would be a great place to start... :D

Just remember to get high quality media. Ritek makes +R media that should work very well. I bought Ritek G-04 -R online, from Supermedia store, they arrived three days later. Verbatim works well too.

+RW media would let you record over any mistakes so you may want to get a couple of those as well.

Cheers,
Frank

Dominoe.

Your 120 min disc is just a 4.7 GB DVD which will hold about 4464 MB of Video files. No problem for Shrink.

A 2.5 hr movie is a rather long one so I would definitely just copy the main movie title only and do a deep analysis. Make sure you remove all the sub-pictures and select just one audio track.

What you need to do is open the disc, let it analyze, and then select re-author. Your movie titles will appear on the left side, your compilation window will be on the left side.
Drag the biggest title over to the compilation window, thats the main movie title. If there are two big titles, drag them both over and then preview them using the preview window.
This will allow you to choose between them. Usually one will be a full screen, the other wide screen. Right click on the one you don't want to keep and delete it.
Make sure you right click on the preview window and select "audio". Now you can listen to different tracks. AC3 5.1-ch is usually the correct one. Just check the corresponding box.
You can use the start/end feature to trim away portions like the end credits for a better compression number. Just try to get the number up above 65% or so.

You can find some great guides here:
