Hey
The other night, out of the blue, my ps3 decided to completely stop reading any form of disc based media (and I've tried all of them). This happened an hour after playing MotorStorm 2 with absolutley no problems. I go to play Dead Space, it goes in fine, but kicks me back to the XMB and tells me the game cannot be started. When I try to eject it, it wont come, and just stutters in the drive. I reset the console, and now all I get is the famed loading symbol in the top right. The disc goes in and out no problem, but no icon on the menu.
After weighing up my options and doing a bit of research, I decided to take matters into my own hands, as my warranty expired months ago. Unfortunatley, Im absolutley rubbish at this type of thing. Basically, what I want to know is what the actual problem is thats casuing the issue. From what I can tell, it's either the lens has packed in, or the motor isn't spinning the discs. I'm aware that the laser is the authority between the two- it waits for a reflective response from the bottom of a disc in the drive before it tells the drive to spin, but I can't discern which of the two is actually the problem. A bit of guidance on what to look for in order to isolate and diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated, so I can then work to fixing it and get my beloved Ps3 working again!
My ps3 is the original 60GB UK model, and it's waiting on my desk with the casing off and internals exposed, ready for me to do some poking around. I can't tell whether the laser is working or not, but it doesn't move back and forth on the rails (the disc getting jammed could have caused a part to derail?), but will move to the forefront when you boot up the console if you slide it back before you power it on. And of course as I said the disc isn't spinning at all.
Thanks in advance people
it sounds like your lens is about to go, exacty the same problem im having. I posted on here yesterday to find out where i can get one and how much it would cost but know one has got back to me. if you go on to you tube it shows you how to replace the lens, but where you get the lens and how much it cost i dont know cos no one is helping me out.
