You can use any number of streaming programs, the most common of which are Windows Media Player 11 and TVersity.

Your best bet, though, would probably be PS3 Media Server. It's the newest media server out there right now... I think... and it's supposedly very very good at what it does.

It can even stream .mkv files (which is what I'm assuming your Blu-Ray files are) without transcoding them first, which TVersity and WMP11 can't, I believe. Obviously, I don't use media servers.

But yeah, that's the word on the e-street nowadays.

Well, if it's a BDMV folder, I don't think you can stream it just yet. You MIGHT be able to if you get AVCHD-Me or something like that, but I don't think it's possible to stream Blu-Ray folders at the moment.

Could someone pls explain how the streaming of files to the ps3 works.

Are the files on my computer being played on my ps3.

Not a lot of in depth detail needed just an example or two.

Like i have my ps3 connected through a wired cat5 cable to my pc, if i have an iso or ts folders of a dvd on my pc can i play them on my ps3 through the cat5 cable. I dont have a router or high speed internet.

Just an example of how you stream anything from pc to ps3.

Not sure if you can connect a standard cat5 cable straight from the PS3 to your PC. You may need a crossover cable (It's a cat5 connection wired differrently on both ends). Don't know, never tried it. I just remember needing to use a crossover cable when I connected my modded xbox to my PC years ago in order to stream.

I know you don't have a router, but I believe the principle of streaming would be the same once you get the PS3-PC connection sorted. You would need to install a media server on your PC, like TVersity for example. In TVersity, you would point to the folder you are storing your video files. When you boot up your PS3 you would go to the "Search for Media Server" option in the video section of the XMB. TVersity should be running when you do this. The PS3 will see TVersity and the video folder that TVersity is pointing to. The same applies to music or pictures.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes i just have my pc and ps3 connected with a cat5 cable nothing else. I have a dial up internet through a cell phone that i plug in with a usb cable. The ps3 even recognizes the connection and i can download from the ps3 store (takes forever but works) I have ydl linux on my ps3 also and i can surf the web on it and my pc at the same time (again slow as hell but works) and transfer files between the two. Thanks for all the help It really clears up a few questions of how it works.
