My PS3 works fine, loads trailers, plays movies, navigates menus fine.
I can go to the store and download demos and trailers and connects to the home network to stream video.
What it can't do is play demos or games,
It gets to the playstation splash screen and then the screen turns black and the controller becomes unresponsive.
I have to hold the power button on the front down for 5 seconds and it beeps once then 5 seconds later beeps 3 times fast and shuts down
when I restart everything else works fine again.
While in a black screen I can see the hard drive active and blinking random so it looks like it is loading the game.
Any ideas what this could be?
Also, I noticed the LIFE channel and the HOME channel go to a black screen too.
It seems like its a graphic thing that it switches to that is black and won't switch back.
I have done a full reset, reformated, restored defaults, I have used HDMI and regular connections.
This unit was recently a YLOD unit that was repaired.
Thanks for your help

Well, this is a shot in the dark, but as far as the demos go, it could be that they're just bad downloads for some reason or another. Have you tried re-downloading/installing them? That worked for me and the Resident Evil 5 demo I had issues with a few days ago.
I wouldn't know what to do about the Life/Home problems, though. I'm also guessing my suggestion won't help either, considering you're having the same problem running three different programs.

Is it possible that it is losing the 'handshake' with the TV. When it happens have you tried turning your TV off and back on again? I only mention this as occasionally my screen goes black (very occasionally) and it requires me to power cycle my telly and not the PS3.

It seems to be a video chip problem or a security issue because of a disconnected br
Does any one have a 60gb older model that plays demos when the br drive is broken or disconected
I had a 40gb that worked fine without the br connected
I thinks it's the graphics chip

Hi,
I have had the same problems. Demos die after the PS3 welcome screen. After reading this thread I've had look in my ps3 to make sure BR drive is connected. It wasn't ( I've had to disconnect it to replace a bluray lens), after reconnecting it all demos play fine.

Hello coxwain,
I wonder how this story has ended, I'm having the exact same problems on a unit that I bought as is, with a defective laser !
I'm about to order a new laser, but I also encounter another problem:
No sound through the optical output (in whatever configuration thinkable, so I think I don't need any configuration suggestions here)
My question: Did anyone experience the missing digital sound issue when having a dead laser ?
