Hi, i've been thinking about buying a PS3 as most of my friends have them and the problems with other consoles, but i've noticed some graphic issues that worry me but i'm not sure if it's the settings being used.
While watching a friend play call of duty three, every time a gun is fired the muzzle flash breaks up into horizontal lines, kind of like interlaced video if you know what i mean.
I've noticed on three different machines bad jaggies, in metal gear solid 4, this was on a ship, the vertical lines of a window would break up completely when the angle changed from vertical, normally i would exspect a jaggy edge as it changed.
Are these due to bad set up's, or is this just how PS3's are, no bashing is intended what so ever, thanks for your time.
Not sure, are they using a HDMI cable or are they using the scart/composite cable?
If you are using the scart/composite cable then you are going to have lower graphics even if you have a HDTV.
If you are using a HDMI cable, do you know which version you have? Use any v1.3 HDMI cable, anything lower doesnt really support higher resolution transfers.
And the first thing you should always do, make sure the cable are in properly :P
Thanks for the reply, they all use HDMI, not sure if they are 1.3 spec though, does the 1.3 cable really make the graphics better, thats good to know.
Will check next time i visit my friends, and inform them of the 1.3 HDMI cable, i have noticed the same graphics on in store game demo's of the PS3 as well, thanks.
That's just bad programming. Stuff that was not necessarily important but was missed by the developers and was too late to be fixed. In COD: WAW on the "Black Cats" mission. When sick all the merchant ships and the oil slick or oil slick effect start to happen. When you look down and continue to look down as your planes fly over you will see a lot of "graphics tearing" and weird jaggies going on in the water around the sinking merchant ships. That's just one game on my PS3 that I noticed this. Again this does not just necessarily happen on the PS3. Initially the PS3's version of Fallout 3 was given a lower scores due to bugs and graphics issue but it was determined that the issue also existed in both the 360 and PC versions of the game.
The XBox 360 version of COD3 was the better version of the 2 consoles but keep in mind that the PS3 was at its infancy when they made the game for it. It was more than likely a port job from the 360 version.
Better graphics between the 2 consoles just depends on the developers. Both system has it's strengths when it comes to graphics, shading and lighting effects.
Some say Burnout paradise is better on the PS3 than the 360. Some say that GTA4 was slightly better on the PS3.
The PS3 is more than capable of dishing out graphically beautiful games. Killzone 2. Uncharted:Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clank, COD4,Burnout Paradise and Wipeout HD are just a few PS3 games that shows what the PS3 is capable of. In time the PS3 will become easier to develop for and it's going to have to be up to the developers to do the job right. Remember the PS1 when tekken 3 came out and how people in the video game media could not believe that the PS1 was capable to generate graphics like tekken 3 had. The same thing happened to the PS2 when God of War 2 cam out.
That's also true, I think it was in another AD thread which pointed out that Sony have intentionally made the programming of games on teh PS3 harder compared to the the PS2 and even the xbox360. And therefore more developers are attracted to the xbox as it's easier and faster to program their games on that.
And as pointed out becuase the PS3 is harder to program for, and since they already have done everything for the xbox version, some developers are just too lazy and port the game over to the PS3. This means tonnes of bugs and problems on the PS3 game and not all the coding is rewritten properly.
And yes a 1.3 hdmi cable can handle transfer speeds of upto 10Gbps, whilst the older ones are only capable of 5Gbps. So for proper 1080p resolutions you are best getting the newer cables. I'm sure by now all the cables you buy from the leading retailers will be 1.3, even though most companies dont tell you which version you are buying.
Thank you for your time and effort and the informative information, i've had a 360, 360's, and the all the head aches that go with them,, even though it has some great games, sepurb graphics i didn't want to continue paying MS for a faulty product that should have been recalled and people compensated, enough said on that.
I'm hoping game developers will put more effort into the PS3 and that one day it will live up to, and in my opinion still the best console ever made in terms of what it achived with it's modest hardware, it's little brother the PS2, thanks again.
