I'm getting a PS3 very soon, and I was contemplating building a HTPC. but I'm wondering is there any point, since I will have a PS3. The main reason for a HTPC is to watch HD content on my TV
I've got a large collection of .avi / .mkv files, could I save/play them directly on the PS3 ? Also, is it possible to download torrents (only legal torrents of course :D) directly on the PS3.
I know that you can stream them, but id dont really wanna do that.
1.) The .avis, you can save onto your PS3 hard drive (with only a few exceptions). The .mkvs, no. Those you'll have to either remux with tsMuxer/mkv2vob or stream to the PS3 using PS3 Media Server.
2.) No, you can't download torrents directly to the PS3 as it doesn't have a BitTorrent client. Unless you install Linux.
3.) "Legal torrents." Hah. You're funny. Besides, all torrents are legal.
Possibly. Most likely. The only issue is that you won't have full access to the Cell or the RSX. As long as those .mkvs are fairly small files (like DVD-quality files), then you should be alright. If they're HD-quality stuff, you might have some issues.
The lack of a torrent client may be fixed in ther near future, I noticed that MGO has two options when downloading updates, from server (FTP) or from peers (P2P) so this bit of code could be exploited at some point for that purpose, though getting it to work outside the PSN could be problematic
