Ok, in System>Sound settings, I click Optical out, and there's boxes there to check, including DTS and Dolby Digital. My surround receiver supports both, so I check both boxes.

EVERY movie file that I've muxed from .mkv -> .ts (or m2ts) that has had DTS audio, the audio is NOT there. Even when I push the audio button on my ps3 remote, it even says "no audio tracks". I know the audio is there because it plays on my PC.

.mkv files with AC3 audio, no problems. Muxes fine into a .ts and plays fine on the PS3.

.mkv files with DTS audio - PS3 doesn't play the audio (either through optical or hdmi).

Why does the System->Sound settings have options for DTS if it can't play these tracks???

It can... just not from any container file. If you want to play it, it has to be on a disc for some reason or another. Muxing those .mkvs to AVCHD would definitely help solve that problem.

Or you could convert it to 5.1 AC3, like you suggested in another thread. That makes it very much playable by the PS3.

Yes right now I'm using mkv2vob to transcode the DTS -> AC3, but that can take HOURS for each movie. Whereas TSmuxer (which doesn't convert the audio) only takes about 1 minute. But with tsmuxer of coruse, you're stuck with the original dts audio (which doesn't play on the ps3).

I mean, I CAN convert all my DTS movies using mkv2vob, which takes a looong time, but I would just rather have my PS3, which has on/off options for DTS, to be able to play the movies with their DTS audio!

Yeah, I know, it's kinda lame, but hopefully, Sony'll patch that in a firmware update.

For now, though, you can just extract the audio with MKVExtract and convert using eac3to. Then when you're done, you can just remux using tsMuxer. It takes a heck of a lot less time than muxing the entire .mkv with mkv2vob.

tsmuxer has a demux option under 'output' (you can output to ts, m2ts, bluray disk, or demux - but I haven't been able to find a program that will simply let you "input file: DTS" then "output file: AC3" - I'll check out that program (eac3to) you mentioned. Demux it with tsmuxer, convert it with eac3to from DTS to AC3, then remux again with TSMuxer. [fingers crossed]

I should have added in ^^ that post that I KNOW there are WAYS to convert dts to ac3, but the posts I've seen dealing with it, involved very loooong and draw out processes to accomplish this. I need a simple input DTS file / output AC3 file program :)

eac3to can convert DTS to AC3 in about 15 minutes... even less for shorter movies.

it is a command line app but there are GUIs out there. Go here for more information.

In the first post there are links to the GUIs available.

Ok, I pulled the DTS audio out of a 112 minute movie, and converted it to AC3 in 4 minutes. I'll remux now and see how she goes :) With my luck the audio will all be way out of sync.

Works! Seems to be in sync too! Although I just FF'ed through to certain parts using VLC. Now for the test on the PS3....

Works fine on PS3 ! Thanks!

Now if only the author of tsMuxer could incorporate that into their program and have a 1-step demux MKV with DTS -> mux into .TS with AC3 :)

Seems like everyone here has good solutions, but I may as well add what I do.

Grab a free program called Audio Converter (I believed it was developed for Popcorn Hour - google search "popcorn hour audio conveter"). It has a nice GUI that actually downloads all of the different video and audio tools you will need for handling mkv's. It converts the audio and muxes to mkv all in one step. It has the options of choosing whatever bitrate you want for the AC3 stream. It also gives you the option of preserving the DTS stream or discarding it. Once you have your new mkv with an AC3 stream, run it through TS muxer for PS3 compatability.

So 2 steps -
1) Run it through Audio Converter.
2) Run it through TS muxer.

Might be better in saving you time since it extracts the audio, converts the audio and remuxes all in one step. It usually takes about 15 minutes on my old PC to run a 1080p mkv through Audio Converter and about 15 minutes through TS muxer. But my PC is a pentium dual core that is almost 4 years old.

1.) Demux the audio from the file (tsMuxer or MKVExtract should do you fine).

2.) Convert the DTS to AC3 using eac3to + a GUI.

3.) Remux everything (your original movie minus DTS track + the AC3 audio) into .m2ts using tsMuxer.

Everything should take just a few minutes. That help?
