can PS3 play burned Blu-Ray discs?

i apologize if this has alredy been posted, i could not find a thread about this. so my question is, can the PS3 play burned Blu-Ray discs? i was intersted in buying a Blu-Ray recorder to back up just about everything on those 25 & 50gb discs., and another question(#2), i have several .mkv files, how do i go about burning these files? do i need a Blu-Ray recorder, or can i simply burn them onto a regular 4.7gb or DVD9(8.5gb)? if so how? i assumed you needed a Blu-Ray recorder to burn hd. Can someone pleae help me with this! i read somwhere where you have to convert the .mkv to a .vob file using mkvtovob, is this correct. what i am going for is to be able to burn the .mkv files and other files on a Blu-Ray disc and watch it on my PS3. pleae help, thank you

i was also wondering about a blu-ray disc ripper & what program you use to burn the blu-ray discs, for example my old dvd burner came with nero for a recording/building program, and can you compile 25 or 50gb of music to play on your PS3? i am very new to the recording of blu ray, i am assuming the format of ausio is still mp3 right?
