Wow, thumpy... wow.

...

...

Well, for what it's worth, people have figured out how to decrypt the PS3's hard drive. And one of the newer innovations is playing PS2 games off a USB drive... and over at PS3hax, there's a bit about playing Starcraft, if that's your thing.

I dunno, any of those count?

Could you please point me in the direction of the PS2 games running of a USB Drive (did a little search and couldn't find anything)?

Thanks in advance.

Though remember that the PS2 hack will only work on PS3s which already have backward compatibility. Those of us wth no BC are still left in the dark for now.

this is a pointless hack if only the BC ps3 can use it.

Yes it is, but for those who do have BC PS3s its an extra something for them.

We just have to blame Sony for employing diots who thought gamers who bought PS3s would want to play PS1 games on it but not PS2 game. It's kindda like saying you can eat anything but only as long as its fed through a tube :P

1.) I don't mean to be an asshat, though this is certainly an asshat move, but everything you say just always has a ring of ignorant childishness to it.

2.) It's not exactly a hack... though I guess it DOES depend on how you define that term... so never mind, it could be a hack.

2.) It's not so pointless if Sony decides to include an update to allow software emulation to be downloaded. It's also not so pointless if hackers figure out how the software emulation works and manages to find a way for it to work on non-BC consoles, regardless of whether Sony includes it in an update or not.

Well, it seems like Sony's just taking the Microsoft angle one step further. MS stopped developing Xbox games once the 360 came out, and they're certainly doing okay. Sony's now becoming 100% focused on the PS3, so it's getting rid of anything that has anything to do with the PS2. Saves money, too. Makes sense.

...except for the fact that their PSOne and PS2 were the two best-selling consoles of their respective generations. Had the most games, too. You're not going to keep a strong fanbase by excluding that which got you started in the first place.

But anyway. Enough of my ranting.

Oh, and a rumor (just an unfounded rumor, mind you) I've heard is that some folks are trying to develop an HDAdvance that'll work either with the PS3's hard drive or the PS2 partition of the hard drive (which you can create by downloading that PS2 System Settings thing from the PSN, loading a PS2 game that can save onto the HDD - like FFXI or Resident Evil Outbreak - and then trying to access the PS2 hard drive). The major advantage this has over the previously mentioned USBAdvance is that it has a higher compatibility with PS2 games (works with around 95% of PS2 games, compared to USBAdvance's... well, much lower percentage).

its cool that hackers found a way to play ps2 games using that usb trick, but seriously how good is it when only the people that can use it are the ones that already can play ps2 games on their system.

If they make that usb advanced thing work on a none bc ps3 than i will say hey thats a step forward but come on to do it on a system that already has bc on it is like taking a step to the side. Not really a big deal if you ask me and the others who got shafted with the none bc ps3.

If playing pirated games is what you're after, then the USB advance trick is a pretty big step I would say...seeing as the console has never been able to play anything more than a SNES game that Sony didnt want you to.

Or for people who want to play their old PS2 imports, like me.

...except that "Figure that, it's not compatible with USBAdvance."

Sonnuvabitch. I was JUST at the point of finishing one game when my PS2 decided to finally die forever on me, and then this boon comes along and I'm all excited, only find out that it just oh so happens to not work with the game I'm trying.

So that part of it sucked, but at least now I can play some of my regular games without having to wear down the PS3's laser.

That's true Kaj, some people will be using it to play imports etc.

However, I would think that most people will be wanting this exploit if thats what it is) to play pirated games, which is why the majority of people want the console to be hacked anyway.

I'm quite happy paying to play my games legally. If a games worth playing, I buy it, if i'm unsure, i rent it first to see what i think of it.

I would be interested in some homebrew, but I can't think of any homebrew app worth all the fuss around hacking the console. The PS3 does just about everything I could ask of it anyway.

Ain't that the truth. It'd be nice if everything in the world was all fruity-tooty and everyone played by the rules and stuff, but eh, can't say that it is and everyone does.

That said, it DOES get rather annoying that the PS3 still has region-locking in place. That's about the only thing that irritates me to no end. Granted, I understand why it's in place, but still... it would've been nice to have the Blu-Ray region codes (and the option to not even bother with it in the first place) replace the old, convoluted DVD and PS2/1 region codes.

...but mostly that's just because I get infinitely frustrated that I can't play an NTSC-J game on an NTSC-U console.
