PSN user arrested for 'online solicitation of a minor'

article published on 15 March, 2009

According to the Houston Chronicle, a Kentucky man has been arrested and charged with promoting child pornography, online solicitation of a minor, and sexual performance of a child after he persuaded an 11-year old girl to send him nude pictures of herself while they played multiplayer games over PSN, the free online network on the PlayStation 3. The man, Anthony Scott O'Shea, 24, of ... [ read the full article ]

I can't wait for some parent to blame the PSN for this... Because there are parents in Texas who refuse to blame themselves.

The girl needs to be punished!?! For what? For being taken advantage of? The girl needs to be congratulated for actually going to her parents, unlike most children who never talk about what happens to them and never get the help they need. It's views that children should be punished for coming forward about the abuse they go through that keep them in the dark and suffering. Which in turn lets these creeps continue taking advantage of them. You have some serious flaws in your personal views.

Wow..pthc on the ps3. Never would have imagined. I thought webcams were only limited to the pc crowd.

In Canada, most downloaders of PTHC who get caught end up with a slap on the wrist their first time. A fine, maybe house arrest if you have a large collection. No jail incarceration. In the U.S., its a mandatory minimum of 5 years. Night and Day difference really.

Thus, in Canada, 500,000 pics (on your THIRD offense!) gets you day parole
http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/index.cfm?sid=66398&sc=98

In the USA, 677 pics get you a whopping 20 years!

*yawn*.. she sent them to him.. so logic says she as the provider of the illegal images should get a heftier sentence then the receiver of the pictures. Isn't taking and distributing indecent pictures of a minor a crime then?

sometimes the lack of logic in the US legal system beggars belief.

obviously the reason she went to her parents is because he said, "take more or ill post them on the internet" and she was scared and didnt know what to do so she told her parents, so yes he belongs in jail and is most definitely a piece of sh**. im glad she is from texas

What are you, a dude with an IQ of 25 that cannot engage into a conversation without using profanities?

How can you be a mind reader with such a low IQ?

The prick should get what he deserves, but the girl/her parents should not just be absolved of guilt. "She is only eleven" doesn't cut it. Its a poor excuse. Playing "Warhawk" at eleven, taking digital pictures of herself and uploading them - where were the parents all this time? I'd say is child neglect right there. And the "little" miss-sunshine, smart enough to do everything , but not smart enough not to go along with all this,eh?

This kind of thing is pervasive now. Kids are sending pics of themselves to each other over the phone, etc. In this age, it's borderline impossible to stay on top of everything your kid is doing. You can monitor all you want, but if they want to access or do something online, they'll find ways (friend's pc, library, etc). About the most effective means is to raise them and spend time with them instead of letting the television or computer do the job, and when someone like this b@stard is caught, include your kid in the conversation. That, you know, and jacking this guy up by his neck to set an example of what we do to pedophiles.

Im in agreement that both should be punished. We charge minors all the time as adults for crimes. This is not much different. The girl knew what she was doing and she knew it was wrong. The guy is a piece of crap and deserves what he has comming to him, but the girl is partially to blame.

Both need to be punished, laws regarding minors have to many loopholes and allow some to hold to much power.

Though things like this are hardly a real crime both need fines levied against them other than that move on nothing new to see here.

The reason I say this is because people over state themselves online all the time IMO the line is only crossed if they did meet IRL.

The point you make is vital and all too few realise it. We all cry foul when this kind of ugliness shows itself, but we must ask ourselves of the accountability of parents and their inaction and inept attitudes. It's all too easy to blame the technological advances made and all too easy to blame someone else. Where are the parents in all this.
It's all nice and wonderful to have a child experience what is in the world with such technology, but to fail to understand that such a tool can bring dire harm is just inexcusable. This little girl will never be the same again, and why?, because someone dropped the damn ball is why. They failed and failed badly. To the parents....Hang your heads in shame at what happened, and as for that filth that was caught..No mercy...No quarter.

She wont ever be the same again because she had to grow up.... life is funny like that....realizations and epiphanies change you and force you to either break or mature.... I should know...I have gone though both....

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

IMO there is some guilt involved though not on the same level.
500 to 2K fine would be acceptable, for the adult receiver 1K-5K fine.

This is if caught, if there were any meetings between them I'd then that becomes a issue where crime might have happened but you just can't police every instance of communication...

Punished no but educated HELL yess it took her "several weeks" to tell her parents and after she "perform for him via a Webcam." WEEKS why did it take weeks? why wasnt the girl screaming for her parents the first time he asked for nude pics? Simply bc the parents failed her clearly did not educate her and Im guessing did not use parental controls to control who she could talk to. The blame and maybe blame is to stong of a word but her parents messed up and this is what these pedifiles pray on. The girl took pics of herself sent them did a webcam show said nothing and after weeks she said somthing? Agian why did it take weeks? This a hold need to go to jail but once again a young girl was fooled and taken advantage of.

Yes there is a huge amt of "sexting" sending a nude photo to your bf or gf or someone via cell phone and they are being charged with child porn and the sender and receiver both being charged and being labeld a sex offender for the rest of there life. and if you show your friends it now your a distributer of child porn even the possibilitys of big sentence the law has not caught up with the technology. Its even worse if you happen to be 18 and your bf or gf is still a minor and sends you a nude pic or you send them one possible big jail time.

. It is a crime child porn is child porn even if its of you. The law has not caught up with the tech. It's called "sexting" ITS ILLEGAL IF YOUR A MINOR AND SEND THEM even to another minor its not a crime when you are 18 or older till then it is actually considered a crime. and if you dont believe me find the Dateline (I think) story on "sexting" prosecuters are going after kids and chargeing them with child porn for sending or getting the nude pics. Look it up "sexting"
