Hey guys I just bought a PS3 off of ebay, it was sold as-is becuase it was missing a hard drive, I installed a Hard drive in it, bought new cables and such for it. I power it on and it keeps asking for a controller then hit PS button. All I have is a PS2 controller with a usb adapter but the console won't detect it. I'm trying to install ubuntu 8.10 (linux) on the console. Everything I've read about it says to use a keyboard and mouse but it still asks for a controller.
Any ideas on how to setup the PS3?

Ive never owned one before and I'm not sure what to do. I greatly appreicate any help in advance.

The PS button is a specific button on a PS3 controller.

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering what they were talking about lol.
Is there a way to setup the console without one? Install linux I mean.
The console didn't have a hard drive when I got it so I didn't know if I need firmware or OS for it.

I'm a complete newbie on this one. I just got the console about 2 days ago.

Some PS2 controller adapters either make the "Analog" button take the place of the "PS" button or have their own "PS" button.

Try pressing the Analog button on your PS2 controller.

I tried that didnt work so my guess is maybe the adapter isn't working.
I bought a new one as well as ps3 controllers from ebay so, I'm sitting pretty until they come in. I wasn't sure what to do to set it all up. Thank you for your help.

Okay My Pelican afterglow ps3 controller came today. The console is doing the same thing. Please insert controller via usb error. I plug the wired usb controller in before turning on the console, the controller lights up but nothing else happens. Im still getting the same error. Im using a PS3 wired Controller with no adapters at all.
I can't seem to get past it.

I tried 4 different controllers so far. And I haven't ordered a wiresless yet. I did buy a wireless remote thing for it, that didn't help either. Ive also tried putting it in diagnostics mode but still can't get past the controller prompt.

Is it becuase the hard drive is blank and needs to be reformatted? Theres no red or yellow error lights that I've noticed so far. Just the normal lights.

Have you actually conected a controller via USB and pressed the PS button?

I don't think it's a formatting problem.

why would u go through 4 diff controllers and still not realize u need a wireless one, if the first wired one didnt work i go and buy a wireless, and thats like $100+ down the drain bc u bought them off ebay. and the controller is only for movies, it may work and the xmb but not for much else.

So you are saying only wireless controllers work? I read somewhere that they wouldn't work unless you synced them or set them up somehow in system settings. Thats why I bought wired controllers thinking that they would automactly work.

Don't takes this the wrong way,
100 or more is not an option right now for me to go buy all these expensive wireless controllers. If I could, I wouldn't be using ebay.
I'm disabled and live on a small income. I'm already maxed out for the month.

Thanks for you're help guys, I do appreicate it very much. Darn kid's always want something that cost an arm and leg for, LOL

I dont think you understand the whole issue here...

At the very first screen asking to press the PS button, it REQUIRES the official controller plugged in using the usb adaptor that comes with it (in the original PS3 box)... That way it can sync the wireless controller to the PS3 and not have it interfere with any other nearby PS3's... Once thats done with, you can then connect any other wired controller after setting up some stuff

okay, I'll try to find one somewhere and report back. So I gather it needs to be a sony wireless controller for ps3. are they made for any ps3?

Just wanted to make sure before I buy one. Thanks again!

yes the official sony PS3 controllers are made to work for any PS3, as all it requires for it to work is a usb cable that comes with the PS3 retail box in which you hook it up from the controller to the USB port of the PS3 which will allow it to sync, as well as charge the controller.

OK. Once I get one of these and get passed the controller prompt, and setup the system will I be able to configure it to take the wired ones as well?

so far I haven't been able to find one. My local game stop is out of them and say they don't know when they will get more. On ebay they are going for more than the price to buy it new.

Some people are saying the usb ports may be bad but, Im not sure. The wired controllers will light up just not respond. So, I would think it would be okay.

Get the official controller, a USB cable and connect the controller to the PS3 via USB and press the PS button.

Once this is done finish any configuration you require and then try the wired controllers - one step at a time.....

Just tried one still didn't work so I guess it is the usb ports can't think of anything else. Im not going to waste more money on buyig controllers that arent going to detect. Its a shame it took so money much to realize that. The console is out of warrenty so I like like to find a way to repair the console on my own. I already repair computers and Ps2's I have so it can't be much harder.

Did you actually buy an official PS3 wireless controller?
Whenever you get a new PS3 controller you have to pair the controller with the PS3, this can only be done by attaching the usb charger cable to the PS3 and controller then pressing the PS button on the controller. After it's paired you can use it wirelessly.

Yes did'nt have any luck. I spent most of the day on ebay looking at motherboards and parts. They all want over 100 just for a stripped down motherboard its crazy.

when you connect the ps3 controller to the ps3 via the usb press the reset button on the back of the controller, you will need a pin/needle to do it then try pressing the ps button again.

I didn't know that, I'll give it a try. Thank You. Also have a motherboard with the usb card/ports on the way just in case. My Model console doesn't have to be soldered becuase the usb card is not built in the board.

OK guys, I was right, bad usb ports. I replaced them and got it working fine now thank you for all your help.
