Hi, an .avi file of this tv show I have doesn't work on the PS3. I know it's probably a codec problem, but have no idea on how to fix it. I did use MediaInfo to get the info for you guys to look at so you can better voice your opinions, so here it is:

General : F:\Supernatural - Season 2\01 - In My Time of Dying.avi
Format : AVI
Length : 281 MiB

Video #0 : AVC at 838 Kbps
Aspect : 720 x 400 (1.800) at 25.000 fps

Audio #0 : MPEG Audio at 128 Kbps
Infos : 2 channels, 44.1 KHz

This information sort of makes sense, and I want to know how I can convert it so it's like this file:

General : F:\Supernatural - Season 1\01 - Pilot.avi
Format : AVI at 1 068 Kbps
Length : 348 MiB for 45mn 30s 605ms

Video #0 : MPEG-4 Visual at 948 Kbps
Aspect : 624 x 352 (1.773) at 23.976 fps

Audio #0 : MPEG Audio at 107 Kbps
Infos : 2 channels, 44.1 KHz

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance everyone.

I dunno if you tried this but i opened Nero and made a data disc out of pics and videos. I was then able to put them in the pics and video categories and watch them. Hope this helps.

i have to agree with the above poster.all i have ever done is put all my .avi files(usually 5 or 6 @ 700 mgs to a disk)and burn a data dvd with nero.the only movie or .avi file i have had a problem with is the aXXo rip of seven pounds.i have it on a dvd but it want play....says unsupported file type.and about the codecs...i have no idea how to install new ones.sorry

weird.. i just got my ps3 like 2 weeks ago.. i set up my computer to allow the device on the network(my ps3) to share media
and now i can view all of My videos, My Pictures, and My Music from my computer
its pretty sweet...
And most of my files work.. there are a few that don't and they are a simple encoding away from being able to be played..

Well , you solved your problem using the program, alltoavi.
but, for other people who stray here...looking for similar help...

First look at the formats the PS3 plays...
this is an old list from 2006, and it may be majorly updated.. not sure on that tho, so don't quote me...

Video, the PS3 will support MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS, TS), MPEG-4 SP, and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.
(As long as your AVI has any of these codecs it will work.
The easiest way to check is to just try to run the file on the ps3, but if you want to check on the computer and look at the files videos codecs, use this. GSpot(search for it here in Afterdawn, theres links i'm sure)

Audio formats support are: ATRAC, AAC, MP3, and WAV.
the audio codec should be ok as most AVI's have mp3 or aac

If your avi doesnt work, it prolly has some weird codec ps3 doesn't support...

there is a quick fix.. Encoding

Download a simple program called Super(search for it here in Afterdawn, theres links i'm sure)
then drag and drop your file into Super.

1. Select your output file. Make it an AVI

2. Select the Output video codec. Just select one from the ps3's list of working videos i just posted)

3. Select the Output Audio Codec. Make it an mp3 or aac

then click on your file on the bottom and then click on the bottom button, called Encode. Let the computer do its thing.

thats it.. you just made it ps3 compatible... encoding the video with SUPER

As always, you need a decent pc do any video editing/encoding/decoding. If the process stops early and your file is small in size, odds are u need a better processor and more memory

Except I have all those and my PS3 still refuses to play the file.

What do you mean , you have all these?

you have all of what? the codecs? the programs i said to download? or the steps ?
please be more specific..

If you have all the codecs, thats great, but that doesn't mean the avi file has the right codec...

if you have all the programs, i suggest you learn how to use them properly..

if you already have all these steps, then you are doin somethign wrong... try it again, go slower, and re read, and make sure you do every step...

you have to encode the file so it uses the right codec.. and once you do... i guarantee the avi will work on the ps3...

Super(C)!
Are you feckin mental!
Stay away from that piece of s**te software, go an get yourself MeGui.
As i have gone throught this with so many people before, another time wont hurt.
Its not the container, AVI, MPG, MP4 etc, its what is contained within, and the headers within the streams.
PS3 can play MP4, but if its not encoded at the correct profile it cannot be played.

If you read me post correctly you lose bag, you would have noticed i said streams contained 'within the container'.
And it does matter about the codec, because you have to convert to strict profiles of said codec, but sure a person with your mentality couldnt possibly understand that.
Any bit of wonder your sayin 'duh why wont it play on my PS3' BECAUSE YOUR PROFILES ARE WRONG! Idiot.

Before this gets out of hand and any worse I think the 2 of you should apologize to each other and if not then just have a proper discussion from here on out without pointing a finger at one other. K?

Sorry Oner, no chance.
Ave been here bout 4 years and have helped numurous people with video encodes.
I was willing to help with MeGui and the use of synth scripts to make top encodes, but if it wants to make crap encodes with crap software, be my guest.
