Well figured i'd post this just to share for you guys.
Last night my buddy calls me and says "hey you have to see what my xbox is doing"
I'm like "ok man let me hop on live and we'll see"
He sends me this picture
btw the xbox is in 1080p

After i saw the first one i was curious to see how bad it could get. So we kept loading custom games and were trying to find some horrible graphical errors.
Here's some pictures for you guys...enjoy

This last picture is snowbound where the oversheild is in the tunnel.
So needless to say he'll be sending me his xbox pretty soon. The best thing about this is that after a couple hours of playing with the different levels i had him restart his xbox and everything is back to normal. I would think this is a sign of the rrod lurking around the corner. The xbox is a halo edition, so probably a zephyr or a falcon. I'm just amazed that it could still run like this.

This usually means you'll be seeing the RROD soon. My games starting doing that right before it happened. Be prepared to send it in or fix it yourself. It's probably overheating.

Nice likely a (h)ana chip or southbridge problem.

Yeah man I hate to say it but the box it going RROD soon, that is exactly what happened to me when mine first box RROD. I did the x-clamp and it worked great for about 6 months, then it died for good.

Thats the GPU going out/heading to RROD. Ive seen many PC videocards do that just before crashing for good.

Hell yeah i do, i laughed pretty hard when my brand new elite started to freeze after 3 months from the mfr date.
I guess working in my field you appreciate the bizzar things that you find. When i was working for compusa there was a guy that dropped his laptop and completely shattered the screen. The funny thing about it was that when he dropped it he bent the supports so bad it grounded the speaker wires to the metal frame in the screen and fried the audio card and a speaker. So instead of just replacing the screen i had to replace a screen, a speaker and an audio card.
It's just like llamma finding a lizard or a cockroach in an xbox, same type of thing.
If any of you have pictures like this feel free to post them.

well no pics but about 10 years ago my dads computer stopped working. opened the case and there was a huge mouse nest in there and mice LOL. we had left off one of the PCI slot covers after removing a card and it snuck in that way. When i worked for Apple and IBM(separate occasions) i recieved several laptops for repair with various items stuffed into the PCMCIA slots from peoples kids jamming items in there. everything from candy to paper to keys..imagine trying to find that missing key lol

what do you do about the brand new consoles freezing? is the freeze just complete lockup without response from the controller's globe or any other button for that matter? Black screen? Freeze with or without artifacting or aliasing?
I have had several new elites (pre jasper) and one jasper arcade just freeze while playing online games. usually during a big closeup explosion on COD or R6V.... I just do cooling mods and haven't had complaints since. I leave the xclamps alone and don't bother with reflowing when they are this new. Or just return them and the retailler is usually happy to exchange them. I dont' believe these brand new consoles are exibiting cold solder joints as they really don't have that many hours on them to have fractured the brittle solder. I have never had a "new" board xrayed as the customer's don't want to cover the expense if the box is brand new. What is your take on this?

thought of another kinda odd one. Got a laptop once that was so severly damaged that it was basically in little bits in a bag. The lcd had been separated into the separate layers of plastic/glass and the liquid from the lcd had cause spill damage in the system board. Spill damage didnt matter cause it was so smashed. contacted the customer and it was a frat boy that had decided taking a sledge hammer to his laptop with his freinds was a good friday night = non economical repair.
here are the nasty ones. I recieved several units different occasions that it was obvious the owner had either left it on the floor and their dog came by and wizzed on it or they got way to drunk and mistook the laptop for a urinal cake. these units were not worked on at all but placed in a biohazard bag and sent back to the customer.
samething happened but with milk that had been spilled one the laptop and either rotted in shipping or they just let it get really nasty and farmed some penicillian off it before sending it in lol

bd the xbox's are usually fine until you get an explosion or a flash of light. Then it's a complete freeze and the only way to reset it is to power cycle the xbox.
Sometimes you'll even get ghosting or streaking and it will happen more and more as heat will work it's way though the xbox. A few times the xbox's worked even longer after they fully cooled down. I can't tell if it's cold solder points, but i know how to fix them.
Anyway i'll probably be stopping in NC on my roadtrip and we'll see what we're working with. I'm guessing it's a zephyr or falcon, so the gpu is probably the issue. Probably do an xclamp replacement with as5 and maybe some custom leds (he's been drooling over the h3 orange led edition i made). So we'll see how it goes and i'll let you guys know.
*edit
i forgot to add, those stories are great, but they bring back some not so fond memories (expecially the biohazard bag). I remember taking apart a laptop that had dried puke all over it... And people wonder why most laptop mb's are covered with removeable hard plastic liners.
Anyway, if you have anymore stories keep them comming.

My buddy arrived last night with his xbox, i started it up and it had a e-74. Took it all apart, did my normal fixes plus added a heatsink i had laying around.
http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product...products_id=115
It's a heatsink llamma sells for the nvida chip on the original xbox's.
I overheated the xbox making the normal walls around the gpu and the hana/ana chip and problem solved. Mark this day if you want to know how long this fix will last, becuase if i don't post here again that means the xbox is still working.

Since you guys are talking about freezes and such i figured i would ask this. Bought a 360 off of craigslist and I new it had rrod. I fixed it and it played for about 5 minutes and then froze up.
So I restarted the box this time it only lasted about 2 and half minutes. basically the progression gets to the point that it won't even get through the open 360 ball screen.
I think that it is an over heating issue but would like a second opinion if someone else has had any exp. with this kind of thing.
Thanks Pit

did you replace the thermal grease? sounds like the CPU is overheating and causing an early shutdown. When replacing the grease it is important to remove all the old grease so the surface shines with no residue.

yes I did but it stills seems to progressively get worse. It doesn't shut the box down it just freezes up the screen. If I leave it off for a while its back to the 5 minutes or so stage then gets worse. So it has to be an overheating issue. I did notice that it had the xclamp fix done to it but maybe that was done wrong as it was done before I got it.

ah ok well it may just be at its end if the fix was already done. also make sure the heatsink is not on backwards
i would try the penny fix to the memory chips with an overheat session of 10-20 mins with the cpu only being cooled by the fan moved ontop of it and backwards so the air is blown down onto it

20 mins? Wouldn't that toast the cpu? Waht does baking it do?

i said keep the fan on the CPU with the air blowing on it so no it wont. the whole issue is the bad solder joints so applying constant pressure with the penny trick under the memory and the board screwed back down into the metal case will cause the joints to become compressed again and then whenu let it cool they hopefully stay inplace.

When you do the x-clamp fix, should you do the penny fix at the same time just to be double safe? or is that not a good idea? How do you know how many pennies to use?

google 360 penny fix there are tuts out there.
but doing it at the sametime as the xclamp wont hurt. i have done it before. when i installed NXE i didnt get rrod but i got messed up graphics so i went ahead and did xclamp and penny trick then to prevent rrod. that was about 6 months ago and no rrod yet.

short penny fix-
Wrap a penny in electrical tape so you can't see any copper. Do this 4 times so you have 4 pennies. Take an exacto knife and seperate the pink pad from the poster puddy like material off the ram chips on the back of the board. Take the pennies and push them onto the poster puddy. Put the board back in the tray along with your xclamp replacement and then overheat the xbox making a wall around the dvd drive and barely cooling the cpu. It's easiest to buy a thermometer and monitor the temp for the gpu heatsink, this way you can see how effective your gpu wall is. I usually move the fan around while trying to cool only the gpu, you can keep reducing airflow to the cpu to get the gpu to run even hotter.
After about 6-8 mins your fan speeds will start to increase. You'll see that on the thermometer every couple degrees will increase voltage to the fan. Let the xbox top out the fan, and it should get hot enough where it just turns itself off (after 15-20 mins). Let it sit for a while to cool down then try to power it on.
Remember you should have only 4 pennies while doing this. I've never had success with any other penny method.
